I grew up on south-side Indianapolis, with family in Seymour, Reddington, and Franklin. I graduated from Ball State (Bachelors of Science) and University of Notre Dame (PhD, Psychology). After retiring from the Cleveland VA hospital, where I was a staff psychologist serving Veterans with injuries and PTSD, I moved back to Indiana, to Columbus to help with family childcare. I’ve been a widow for 5 years, with two stepchildren and two granddaughters. I’ve always followed politics and current events, and have paid a lot more attention in recent years to local issues and elected officials, because here is where our lives are most directly affected. People are coming to realize that, without their attention and vote in all elections, many officials slip by and keep their seats for term after term after term, and give away tax dollars to pet projects that may or may not benefit the public. At the same time, public services go unfunded and public protection ordinances are unenforced. Community service and organizations:

- Winding Waters chapter, Sierra Club - Member (and co-founder), the Critical Care Special Interest Group, Division of Rehabilitation Psychology, American Psychological Association

- Member, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus (IN)
  • Q: “If Bartholomew County keeps adding sizable wage increases and benefits for employees every year, we will create expenses that will never go away.” Do you share this concern? A: There are chronic concerns about retaining Bartholomew County employees. This is being addressed by large salary increases for law enforcement, & some professional and elected positions. However, salaries continue to lag for many other essential workers. The median salary among all our county employees is $47,000, compared to $51,000 for county employees around Indiana (2023 data). With Bartholomew’s current median home price of $255,000, & median monthly rent of $1,278 for a 2BR apartment, half of our employees struggle, spending 30% or more of income.
  • Q: “What are your thoughts about tax abatements that local governments use to attract companies?” A: When I consider tax abatements for more manufacturers, what comes to mind is: “water.” Bartholomew is blessed with a complex variety of ground water aquifers, but is challenged by aging infrastructure & the rising consumer costs for upgrades. We already see the decreased reliability of rainfall, & more need for groundwater irrigation by our farmers. The supply of water will shrink with more industrial development. Water treatment cost will rise due to CAFOs, applications of biosolids, & future regulations to remove “forever chemicals” (PFAS). We must ensure that development subsidies are not exchanged for public safety.
  • Q: Why are you running for this seat and what do you hope to accomplish if elected? A: Change starts locally. I’m a quick study, & I have what it takes to make a difference working with others & listening to their concerns. Our county government hasn’t had a single person from the “other party” in 40 years. We need balance, accountability, representation, regular meetings at regular times when people can attend. We should prioritize water quality & preserve water aquifers. Our county’s cases of extreme cruelty to companion animals should be prosecuted. When the Council considers requests from developers for more TIFS and tax breaks, they must prioritize tax payers & community resources; public schools should not be shortchanged.
Environmental sustainability and water quality. Prosperity for family farms, and protection for their choices, such as solar contracts. Protection of companion animals from neglect and abuse. Resources for public health including mental health. Informed oversight of county spending and safety regulations.
Integrity: not primarily looking for gain to yourself (not focused on money, fame, status). Empathy and communication with the public and with fellow office holders. Intelligence and curiosity to learn about every new relevant issue. Attention to detail: looking for instances of waste or cheating, making sure that projects and departments really do benefit the public. The highest purpose is to preserve natural, human, and financial resources for future generations.
I am smart and persistent. I am curious and I listen. I have hyperfocus for details when I’m determined to learn about something.
Clean water for Bartholomew county, with better quality of life for people and pets.
Piano accompanying for other music majors in college (even after I switched majors to Psychological Sciences). Next job was as a waitress. Let’s just say that in my brief time trying that, I gained a lifelong respect for ability to multitask that is a feature of all good waitresses. I came up short in the multitasking/ juggling orders department.
So many favorites. For now let’s say _An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us_ by Ed Yong
“Late for School” by Steve Martin, because my grandnephews ask for it multiple times every day.
