Nancy Slotnick participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on July 30, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Nancy Slotnick's responses follow below.[2]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | My top priorities are fostering collaboration in our federal government to help end the deadlock and restore civility; immigration reform to improve access to legal immigration; and fighting for equality.[3][4] | ” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | I am personally very passionate about keeping our commitments to our nation's military veterans, improving employment and educational outcomes for all Americans, and fixing our immigration system.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]
|
” |
Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Nancy Slotnick answered the following:
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
“ | I am an analytical and empathetic listener. I place a high value on understanding the lived experiences of others that are different from my own. I thrive on receiving a wide variety of input so that I can get to the core of an issue and can work to find collaborative solutions while avoiding unintended consequences.[4] | ” |
“ | The duty of a U.S. Representative is to strive to truly represent the people of the District and find the solutions that create the best outcome for our nation and our people without respect to political party or special interest groups.[4] | ” |
“ | I would be honored to serve on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. I also would like to serve on the Judiciary Committee, specifically on the Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security.[4] | ” |
“ | I believe that two year terms for U.S. Representative give voters a frequent chance to evaluate the effectiveness and responsiveness of their representation.[4] | ” |
“ | I support term limits. While some degree of building on experience is valuable, I do not believe that being a U.S. Representative should be a career. Some would suggest that the two year re-election cycle is adequate and that term limits aren't needed because Representatives can be voted out, but the contradiction between the approval rating for Congress and the re-election rate of incumbents is strong evidence against that assertion.[4] | ” |
“ | I favor independent redistricting commissions over other methods. Ending gerrymandering is essential to electing Representatives and Presidents that truly represent the will of the people rather than keeping the same political parties in power.[4] | ” |
Ballotpedia biographical submission form
The candidate completed Ballotpedia's biographical information submission form:
“ | What is your political philosophy?
I believe that our nation is stronger when we are united and treat each other with respect and civility. I am running for office as an Independent and a moderate/centrist because I believe that the two major parties are failing the American people. Our founding fathers cautioned against a government divided by competing factions who alternately took power and then governed from a position of revenge against the opposing faction. I want to increase collaboration within our government for the benefit of all Americans and our National interest. Is there anything you would like to add? In addition to being a 25 year U.S. Army veteran and a small business owner, I am the mother of four adults. I will bring the right mix of strength, pragmatism, and compassion to the office of U.S. Representative.[4] |
