Two of the five seats on the Monongalia County Schools Board of Education were up for general election on May 10, 2016. In their bids for re-election, incumbents Ronald Lytle and Nancy Walker ran unopposed and won additional terms. Rob Core originally filed to run as a challenger in this race, but he withdrew on February 16, 2016, the last day he was able to do so.[2][3][4][5]

Though the election was held at large, only two members from the same geographical district could be on the board during a given term. Both incumbents were from the Eastern District. Because they ran unopposed to retain their seats, the district rule did not affect the election.[2][6]
