Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto is an at-large member of the Fremont Union High Board of Education in California. She assumed office in 2018. Her current term ends on December 11, 2026.

Biography

Nakano-Matsumoto earned a B.S. in sociology from Weber State College in 1982. She then received a master of social work from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work in 1986. Nakano-Matsumoto has worked as a nonprofit executive from 1994 to present and as a social worker since 1981.[1]

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

Death of JFK when I was 3 years old. I remember watching it on tv and being transfixed by the somberness and enormity of grief/tragedy.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

From the age of 5, I helped my parents who worked on a turkey farm. I began getting paid from the age of 12.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

Governance, fiduciary, hiring of superintendent, community representation and relations, school district ambassador, setting policy that meets the mission of the district.

Who are your constituents?

Students, teachers, staff, families, community.

What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?

Provide better access to them, especially for the students/families/communities that live the farthest from the school district. Engage in their neighborhoods, be visible and provide opportunities for time accommodations.

Do you believe it is important to intentionally recruit with the aim of diversifying the district’s faculty, staff, and administration? If so, what would be your policy to achieve this?

Visibility and representation is crucial to move to equity and inclusion.
