Six seats on the Nash-Rocky Public Schools school board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
In District 2, incumbent Jon Hardy ran against newcomers Linwood Weeks , Jeff Williams and Wendy Wilson. Incumbent Brenda Brown was unopposed in District 4. Tiffany Delano, Wayne Doll and Steve Williams challenged incumbent Bonnie Baker Batts for the District 6 seat. Incumbent Reginald Silver faced Steve Bulluck for the District 8 seat. In District 9, incumbent Robert Bynum ran against challenger LaShawnda Washington. Incumbent Michael David Grover, Ricky Jenkins and Latasha B. Sledge also faced off for a two-year term in the District 7 seat.
Wendy Wilson was elected to the District 2 seat. Incumbent Brenda Brown retained her District 4 seat. Newcomer Wayne Doll was selected to fill the District 6 seat. Reginald Silver kept the District 8 seat. Incumbent Robert Bynum was re-elected to the District 9 seat. Ricky Jenkins was selected for a two-year term in the District 7 seat.
About the district
Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools is located in Nash County, North Carolina. The county seat of Nash County is Carthage. Nash County is home to 95,093 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools was the 24th-largest school district in North Carolina and served 16,952 students.[2]
Demographics
Nash County underperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.9 percent of Nash County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8 percent for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Nash County was $43,757 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Nash County was 17.6 percent compared to 16.8 percent for the entire state.[1]
