Hello there! My name is Nasra Wehelie. I’m an Alder on the Madison Common Council and am running to represent our new WI State Assembly District 80. My website is nasraforwi.com, where you can learn more about our campaign.

I’ve been involved in community advocacy for over 20 years, run a small business that works with nonprofit organizations, and sit on various community boards, including the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County and the Wisconsin League of Municipalities. I was a founding member of the Wisconsin Women's Entrepreneur organization, and have worked closely with organizations centered around criminal justice reform.

This February, Governor Evers signed new maps into law which significantly redrew our district. It went from a more rural district to now encompassing a large portion of the west side of Madison, Cross Plains, the Town of Middleton, and Verona. It’s important that residents like you have a choice on the ballot this November, and that is why I am in this race.

It’s time to unify the division in our state Capitol to pave the way for real progress. I’ve spent my career collaborating with people of different backgrounds. I’m ready to tackle critical issues such as housing affordability, supporting families, empowering women, enhancing public safety measures, and driving economic development. You can find all of the policies at nasraforwi.com/priorities.

I hope to earn your trust and vote on Tuesday, August 13th! Thank you for being a voter
  • We fought hard and won fair maps in Wisconsin, giving us a historic opportunity for voters like you to have genuine representation. It's time for every voice to be heard and every vote to count equally. I'm committed to ensuring that everyone in our community has a fair chance to be represented.
  • As your state legislator, I'll focus on the issues that matter most to us. Supporting our small businesses, which are the backbone of our state, is a priority. As a woman, I'm deeply invested in championing women's rights, especially as they continue to be stripped away. I have innovative ideas to make Wisconsin a leader in supporting women. Additionally, we must do more to support our kids by strengthening public education and providing the resources they need to thrive.
  • Empowering residents is central to my policy agenda. I know that too often, politicians disconnect from their constituents once elected. I promise to keep an open line of communication and ensure that those most affected by the issues are brought to the decision-making table. Together, we can make decisions that truly reflect the needs and desires of our community.
As a mom of four kids who went through the public school system, I am deeply committed to ensuring our children receive the best education and opportunities. This means well-funded public schools and addressing disparities in educational resources. Advancing women's rights is another top priority for me. I am dedicated to fighting for reproductive rights, equal pay, affordable childcare, and greater political representation for women. Supporting marginalized communities and our small businesses and fighting recidivism within our criminal justice system are other policy areas I have worked on and hope to advance in the state legislature.
If you want to understand my political philosophy, I highly recommend "Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption" by Bryan Stevenson. This powerful memoir documents Stevenson's career as an attorney defending disadvantaged clients. My favorite quote from the book is, "There is power in proximity. When you get proximate to people who are suffering, you can wrap your arms around them, and you will be empowered with the belief that you can change the world." This quote encapsulates the essence of empathy and the transformative impact of being close to those in need, which is central to my approach to public service.
An effective elected official should deeply understand and empathize with their constituents' needs, advocating for policies that protect and support everyone, especially the most vulnerable. Working collaboratively and embracing bipartisanship is crucial, as well as finding common ground with other legislators to achieve shared goals and progress on important issues. A steadfast commitment to justice ensures that fairness and equity are at the heart of all policies, championing social justice and equal rights. Strong leadership and openness to innovative solutions are vital for addressing the state's challenges and shaping a bright future for Wisconsin.
As a State legislator, I hope to leave a legacy of meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of Wisconsin residents. Serving our community is a privilege that comes with great responsibility. I am committed to implementing policies that reflect and respect the diversity of our population, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in the decision-making process. I aim to champion initiatives that empower women, promote gender equality, and address unique challenges such as reproductive rights, equal pay, affordable childcare, and political representation and leadership.

I want to ensure that our education system is equitable, with increased funding, better resources, and reduced disparities, so all students have the opportunity to succeed. Supporting innovation and entrepreneurs is another key goal, making Wisconsin a hub for new businesses and technologies. I am also dedicated to implementing reforms for a fairer and more effective criminal justice system. Through these efforts, I hope to create positive change and progress for all residents of Wisconsin.
"I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. Since entering this Assembly race, I have faced numerous challenges from both the Assembly Democrats and the Wisconsin Democratic Party, including being denied access to crucial campaign resources. As an immigrant who has looked up to American democracy, it was disheartening to see a party seemingly select candidates instead of giving that power to the people. This song resonates with me because it reminds me to persevere and reinforces my belief that we will overcome these obstacles and succeed in this election.

The support from community leaders and our dedicated team of over 60 volunteers strengthens my resolve and keeps me optimistic about our success. Knowing that so many people believe in our cause is incredibly inspiring and motivates me to keep pushing forward.
One significant struggle in my life has been experiencing multiple layers of discrimination simultaneously due to my intersecting identities as a Black, Muslim woman, and an immigrant. Each aspect has brought unique challenges and barriers, but facing them together intensifies adversity. These experiences have shaped my resilience and deepened my commitment to advocating for equity and justice for all marginalized communities.
Over the next decade, I see several significant challenges that our state must address through proactive and innovative policy solutions.

Housing: We need to tackle the shortage of affordable housing, especially in urban areas where costs are soaring. Implementing comprehensive strategies to prevent and reduce homelessness is also crucial.

Healthcare: Expanding access to affordable and high-quality healthcare is essential, particularly in rural areas where services are often limited. Additionally, improving mental health services and addressing the rising rates of mental health issues and substance abuse are critical priorities.

Education: Ensuring adequate funding for public schools, colleges, and universities is necessary to provide high-quality education and reduce disparities. We must address achievement gaps and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for all students.

Economic Development: Bridging the skills gap is vital to ensure our workforce meets the demands of a changing economy, particularly in technology and advanced manufacturing. Diversifying the economy to reduce reliance on specific industries and foster resilience against economic downturns is equally important.
Yes, building relationships with other legislators is highly beneficial, regardless of party affiliation. Working well with colleagues promotes the achievement of common goals and helps move forward on important issues. As an alder on the Madison Common Council and through my community work on various organization boards, I have consistently collaborated with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Even when we don't always see eye to eye, we find common ground and work together for the greater good. This experience has reinforced the importance of bipartisan cooperation, and it is something I will bring with me into the state capitol.
Our campaign is proud to have the support of more than 50 elected officials and community leaders, including Madison Mayor Staya Rhodes-Conway, former Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, and Fitchburg Mayor Julia Arata-Fratta.
The committees that interest me the most are those focused on Jobs and the Economy, Criminal Justice and Public Safety, Education, Housing, Government Accountability and Oversight, and Small Business Development.
