Natasha Ruiz
Natasha Ruiz (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Texas House of Representatives to represent District 142. She lost in the Democratic primary on March 3, 2020.
On March 5, 2020, ABC13 reported that the District 142 incumbent, Harold Dutton Jr., had alleged that Natasha Ruiz was not a legitimate candidate in the March 3 Democratic primary for the seat. Dutton said, "We have never seen them, we never talked to them, they never showed up, they never had a sign. They don't seem to be a real person."[1] Keith Ingram, the Director of Elections for the Texas Secretary of State office, responded to the story and said, "The process for applying to be in the primary is governed by the party. It’s up to the party and other candidates in the race to make sure everyone meets eligibility requirements."[2]
On March 18, part of the Democratic state legislative delegation from Harris County and the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats sent a letter to the Harris County District Attorney's office asking for Ruiz's candidacy to be investigated. In response, the district attorney's office wrote, "It is the policy of the Harris County District Attorney to neither confirm nor deny the existence of a criminal investigation into any matter brought before the Public Corruption Division."[3]
