I'm Nate Douglas and I'm running for State House Representative for District 37 because I believe that big challenges require new solutions. I'm a first generation American raised by a public school teacher and a small business owner. I was born and raised in Central Florida, and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Food and Resource Economics. Currently, I am pursuing a graduate degree in Information Systems and work as a policy researcher.

When I was elected to the Soil and Water Conservation District Board in 2020, I fought to protect vital waterways and forests while the state government relentlessly stripped away the local community’s rights and freedoms to choose.

I am a Gen-Z candidate fighting to grow the economy by empowering local businesses, protecting the environment, ensuring world class education for all, and amplifying the community’s voice when it comes to vital issues like abortion access.

After seeing the impact of inaction in the face of continued problems such as rising housing costs, soaring utility costs, less clean drinking water, and the attacks on everyday Floridians, I heard a call to run. I am running for a district with the second largest university campus in the nation and believe it is time for young people to have a seat at the table.
  • Grow our economy by empowering our local business owners
  • Protect our environment while developing sustainably
  • Everyone should have access to quality healthcare and education
Local Economics

In the state legislature, I will prioritize anti-trust legislation and promote economic fairness, empower workers, support small businesses, and create a more democratic economic system while effectively regulating corporate power, and ensuring healthy market competition.
Education
Quality education should be accessible for all students. Florida ranks 48th in the nation in teacher pay and experiences the largest drop in learning between fourth and eighth grades. I will fight to make sure that k-12 teachers are given a pay raise to match top states, increased academic freedom, and stronger unions. Students should have a safe learning environment that challenges them to think critically and learn new perspectives.
Healthcare
The American healthcare system emits more greenhouse gas (GHG) than the entire country of the UK. If it were a country, it would rank 13th in GHG emissions. I will fight to make our healthcare system sustainable and fight for the expansion of Medicaid because healthcare is a human right. Florida is the 4th most expensive state for healthcare and Floridians with employer-provided family coverage pay the highest premium in the nation. 52% of Florida skipped out on going to the doctor because they were worried about the price of treatment. Furthermore, our state has stripped away our reproductive freedoms.
Development

Increase funding for more transit such as bus-only lanes, light-rail, and aerial transit.
Ady Barkan. Barkan is an activist who was diagnosed with ALS, he fights hard for what he believes in. I want to be a fighter for my community and others as well, just like him.
The core responsibilities for someone elected to this office involve effectively representing the concerns and interests of our constituents on the state level. This entails drafting, debating, and voting on legislation that directly impacts our local communities. It's about addressing the specific challenges and opportunities that our region encounters, whether that means crafting laws to strengthen our local economy, advocating for improvements in education and healthcare, or championing policies that protect our natural resources. Additionally, engaging with constituents through town halls, actively seeking their input, and acting as a conduit between their needs and the state's legislative processes are vital aspects of this role. Collaboration with fellow legislators and meaningful engagement with local residents are crucial to finding new solutions to big challenges.
I grew up to two hard-working immigrant parents. When I was seven years old, my family nearly lost our house during the '08 housing crisis like millions of other middle-income families. This crisis was caused by over-construction and an unregulated market that valued profit over people, these two factors are leading to a historic climate crisis as well.
Call agent for the Department of Economic Opportunity; 6 months.
Florida's greatest challenges in the next decade revolve around the impending climate crisis, which threatens to unleash economic devastation of unprecedented magnitude. With rising sea levels, increasingly intense hurricanes, and more frequent flooding events, Florida's coastal communities, vital industries like tourism and agriculture, and overall economic stability hang in the balance. Tackling these challenges demands a proactive approach, involving investments in climate resilience infrastructure, stringent building codes, and a transition to renewable energy sources. Failure to take immediate action risks condemning Florida to a future marred by crippling economic losses, environmental degradation, and societal upheaval, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions.
Yes. it is important to have a working relationship with other legislators in order to pass legislation that helps the district, brings appropriation funds to the district, and work effectively on committees that represent our local community's interests.

Nate Douglas was born in 2000 in Celebration, Florida. He went to school at Apopka High School, where he joined the Engineering magnet program and lead various clubs and organizations. Nate is currently studying at the University of Florida and he is a substitute teacher for OCPS. Nate has always been very active in the community, especially surrounding the areas of climate policy and workers rights.
  • Engage our community in the fight against climate change
  • Promote fresh ideas for Orange County
  • Bold plans and strategies to address climate change
Orange County needs leaders who aren't afraid to stand up for the community in the fight against climate change. Nate will work endlessly to expand the role that the Soil and Water Conservation District has in the community. There are four specific policy areas that Nate will promote to protect Orange County from the negative impacts of climate change:

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲
If the United States healthcare system operated as a nation, it would rank 13th in the world for CO2 emissions. Nate advocates for pressuring local healthcare facilities to transition to 100% renewable energy and encouraging hospital cafeterias to carry food from local farmers; these changes will make our healthcare system clean and stimulate our local economy.
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
The average street carries around 1,600 people per hour; the average street with transit-only bus lanes carries 8,000 people per hour. Nate advocates expanding transit-only bus lanes and making transportation more accessible for communities in need.
𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆
Orange County is majority-minority. Communities of color are already feeling the impacts of climate change and residents are 3 times more likely to die from airborne pollutants. Nate will work to address the issues these communities face such as food deserts and unsustainable waste.
𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

Nate looks forward to working with city and county officials to promote effective water management and regrowth efforts.
The Orange County Soil and Water Conservation District was created after the great dustbowl in the 1930s. The office was created to educate the community on safer agricultural practices. Yet again, we're facing another climate emergency, this office is key in helping to educate our community about the impacts of climate change and how they could help to mitigate them.
Ady Barkan. Barkan is an activist who was diagnosed with ALS, he fights hard for what he believes in. I want to be a fighter for my community and others as well, just like him.
An elected official should be honest, energetic, and diligent.
Attending the meetings regularly, engaging with the community, and working with others to address local issues.

Orange County residents should be aware of the long-term resolutions that the board can create regarding water management. The office can also have a significantly larger presence in the community.
No. This is the office for anyone who's informed about the issues facing our water supply and environment.
The ability to communicate, be prepared, and listen to the concerns of others.
