Nathan B. Stewart
Nathan Stewart is a former circuit court judge for the 23rd Circuit Court in Missouri, serving Jefferson County. He was first elected to the court in 2010. Stewart ran for re-election in 2016 but was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016.[1][2]
Biography
Stewart graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with his B.S. in education in 1988. He received his J.D. from the same institution in 1992. He has a lifetime certification to teach secondary social studies.[3][4]
Before Stewart became a judge for the 23rd Circuit Court, he was an associate judge for the court, a job Governor Bob Holden appointed him to on January 6, 2005. From April of 1999 until he became an associate judge, he was a family court commissioner for the 23rd Circuit Court, a quasi-judicial post. He started in private practice with the Wegmann law firm in the early 1990s.[4][5][6]

Missouri held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on August 2, 2016. The filing deadline for those wishing to run in the primary was March 29, 2016. Judges running in a retention election on November 8 had to file by August 23.[7] Dianna Bartels defeated incumbent Nathan B. Stewart in the Missouri 23rd Circuit (Division 3) general election.[8]

Stewart ran unopposed for re-election to the 23rd Circuit Court and was re-elected on November 2, 2010, receiving 100 percent of the vote.[10]
Judicial selection method

The 141 judges of the Missouri Circuit Courts are elected to six-year terms in partisan elections, except in the cities of Springfield, St. Louis, and Kansas City. At the end of their terms, judges must face re-election.[11]
The chief judge of each court is elected by the circuit and associate judges from among the sitting circuit judges.[11]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:
- a U.S. citizen for at least 10 years;
- a qualified state voter for at least three years;
- a resident of the circuit for at least one year;
- licensed to practice law in the state; and
- at least 30 years old.[11]
