I am Nate Kieso, mental health social worker, union member, and candidate for Assembly District 14. My wife and I own a century-old bungalow off National Ave and I work in the district at a residential facility for men with mental health disorders.

I was raised by a USAF veteran mother and research scientist father. Sadly, when I was nine years-old my father passed away. My mother was left to raise two kids on a CNA’s salary, but she was able to do so, because she was in a union. I joined that same union and have continually fought for working people. I fought on successful union organizing drives and campaigns to raise local minimum wages, but my proudest organizing moment was winning thousands in backpay and raises for black coworkers paid less than equally qualified white coworkers. I am on the City of West Allis Capital Improvement Committee, where we review and approve budgets for major purchases made by the city. I am deeply interested in matters of policy and have experience in governance.

As a social worker I have cared for people with disabilities, advocated for elders in long-term care, and provided treatment for people with mental health issues. Throughout my entire career I have served and cared for others. I want to bring this compassion, experience, and leadership to Madison, where I will faithfully serve the constituents of the 14th District.
  • I have spent my entire career caring for and in the service other others. I have witnessed firsthand the crisis in Wisconsin healthcare. The GOP refuses to allow thousands of struggling people in Wisconsin to be on BadgerCare. Our elders and dependent adult neighbors deserve the best long-term care and many more people will need care in the near future, but it is difficult to recruit workers. Healthcare workers are drastically underpaid, they are caring for our loved ones, and they are living paycheck-to-paycheck. To address this crisis we must expand BadgerCare, raise wages, and subsidize education for aspiring healthcare professionals.
  • I understand the importance of building coalitions and negotiations. I am on the West Allis Capital Improvement Committee, where we make recommendations on major city purchases, but local governments, especially in Milwaukee County, are disadvantaged by the state's unfair revenue sharing scheme. I negotiated union contracts which made solid gains for workers, but required give-and-take with employers. I am pragmatic and experienced in governance. I will get buy-in from stakeholders and reach agreements to achieve what is best for Wisconsin working people.
  • Working people want their voices heard. A Duke University study published in February 2024 found that less than 2% of legislators in US statehouses are in the working-class. Working people are excluded from the processes which affect their daily lives and this is reflected in the disturbing policies of the Wisconsin GOP. I know these struggles because I am living them. I am the working class candidate and I will support raising the minimum wage, restoring Wisconsin worker rights, and making Wisconsin workplaces safe.
I am focused on four key areas: healthcare, worker rights, sustainable infrastructure, and public education.
At the River I Stand (1993). Documentary about the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike.
My very first job was detasseling corn. It was over the summer when I was 15. I worked at a call-center the next and other seasonal jobs, but my first job after high school was as a direct care worker at a group home for people with disabilities. I did this work for four years and it was formative. A society should be judged on how it treats its most vulnerable, but working in the field, I observed that care for the most vulnerable in our society is undervalued.
As of 4/28/2024: Justin Bielinski, Milwaukee County Board, 19th District Supervisor. Missy Zombor, Milwaukee Public Schools Board, Member-at-Large. Paul Spink, AFSCME Council 32, President. Juan Miguel Martinez, Milwaukee County Board, 12th District County Supervisor. Travis Albert, Wisconsin State Association of Letter Carriers, Treasurer. Jaclyn Kelly, Wisconsin Labor History Society, Executive Director
