Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Martha Roby (R) defeated the only Democrat to file in the race, Nathan Mathis, in the general election. Roby defeated Becky Gerritson and Robert Rogers in the Republican primary on March 1, 2016.[1][2][3]

I am the oldest living child of Hosea and Pauline Mathis who were sharecroppers for H H Dowling and Bro's of Pinckard Al . A graduate of Slocomb High in Slocomb Al and Alabama Christian College in Montgomery Al where I was captain of the basketball and baseball teams .Served six months active duty in Army at Ft Polk La then married Sue Smith from Slocomb and began farming on my own in 1964 . Was selected Outstanding Young Farmer for Houston County Al in 1968 . Coached Dixie Youth Baseball for 18 years . Two children ; both deceased Joey and Patti Sue . Elected Chairman of Houston County Commission 1974 - 1978 . Was elected State Representative for Geneva and Houston Counties 1982 - 1994 . Still farming peanuts , corn , cotton , and cattle .
  • Congressman Austin Scott R-Ga who will be next Ag. Committee Chairman told Peanut Farmer magazine that he needed people on his committee that knows about farming ; that he did not care if they were Republican or Democrat . I am running to fill his request for I understand farming .
  • We need to keep Social Security in place ; keep it as we promised it would be as people paid into the program thru the years .
  • I want to maintain and expand the mission at Ft Rucker and Maxwell-Gunter and hopefully create more good paying jobs .
Former Senator Howell Heflin and Senator Jim Allen . Both would tell you the truth and would help you when they could .
Truthful , Honest and Always willing to help others .
I was elected Chairman of Houston County Al and at the time the youngest Chairman in the State : 1974 - 1978 .
Started farming in 1964 and am still farming 56 years later.
Bible. There are many lessons one can learn from the Bible .
Restore other countries trust so they know our word is good and our resolve to help our allies is genuine .
The people can term limit a Congress member now every two years . But I would support a term limit bill for all.
