The National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) is a bipartisan 501(c)(6) organization that includes state treasurers or equivalent senior financial officials from all fifty states and counterpart officials representing Washington, D.C., and other qualified territories and commonwealths. According to its website, the NAST "enable[s] state treasurers and officials who perform state treasury functions to pursue and administer sound financial practices and programs benefiting the citizens of the nation."[1]


Background

The National Association of State Treasurers was founded in 1976.[2] Their website says the following about their mission:[1]

As we advance sound financial practices, policies, and education through State Treasurers and other NAST members, we uphold the following values in ethics, expertise, and collectiveness:
  • Members and staff will hold themselves accountable and act with integrity and transparency representing the best practices of their office and the Association
  • NAST shall act as the collective authority on practices and policies related to finance and investment for state government and the citizens we serve
  • We will promote and facilitate the open and bipartisan exchange of time-honored and innovative ideas and information, and seek out external collaborations wherever appropriate, to provide objective analyses and viable solutions to address state financial and investment concerns[3]

Policy advocacy

The National Association of State Treasurers' website says their goal "is to be the nation’s leading advocate for responsible state treasury programs and related financial practices and policies. The organization’s policies are guided by resolutions adopted by the membership." The NAST provides info and resources on policies and programs such as ABLE funds supporting people with disabilities, college savings funds, public finance, and unclaimed property.[5]

Committees

The NAST is led by a thirteen-person committee consisting of eight voting members and five non-voting members. Of the group of voting members, there is a president, senior vice president, secretary-treasurer, most recent past president, and four regional vice presidents. The remaining five individuals, the non-voting members, include the presiding officer of each Affiliated Network, the chair of the Legislative Committee, and the presiding officer of the NAST Corporate Affiliate Program. Elected annually, the Executive Committee supervises the association’s operations. Each year, a region chooses a NAST Vice President who moves up through the ranks to become president.[4]
