The National Black Police Association (NBPA) is a nationwide organization of African American Police Associations that promotes justice, fairness and effectiveness in law enforcement. The NBPA has chartered organizations in the united states as well as associate members in Canada, Bermuda and the United Kingdom. Created in 1972, the NBPA is a nonprofit corporation.[1] The mission statement of the NBPA is "To increase the awareness of the community, to be the conscience of the Criminal Justice System, and to enhance the quality of life in the African-American community."[2]

Some major purposes for the NBPA are improving relationships between Police Departments and minority communities; Evaluate policies and programs effects in the Criminal Justice System on minorities; Recruit minorities on a national scale; Eliminate police corruption, police brutality and racial discrimination; And teach police to operate with professionalism and compassion.[3]

History

The NBPA was created in 1972 as a not-for-profit corporation in the state of Illinois.[4]
