Nayiri Nahabedian is an at-large member of the Glendale Unified School District Board of Education in California. She was first elected to the board in 2007.[1] Nahabedian successfully ran for re-election in the nonpartisan general election on April 7, 2015.[2][3]
Nahabedian filed a lawsuit to get on the ballot for the general election on April 7, 2015. Her nomination papers were originally rejected by the Glendale City Clerk's Office, as she filed them after the incumbent deadline on January 29, 2015. The City Clerk's Office had sent an email to potential candidates on January 28, 2015, telling them the deadline would be extended to February 3, 2015. Nahabedian received that email and filed her papers during the extended filing period, not knowing the deadline was only extended for non-incumbents, according to her lawsuit. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge sided with Nahabedian, allowing her to run in the election.[4][5]
Nahabedian was a Democratic candidate for District 43 of the California State Assembly. She was defeated in the primary election on June 8, 2010.[6]
Biography
Nahabedian graduated from the Glendale Unified School District. She teaches at California State University at Los Angeles’s School of Social Work. Nahabedian earned both her bachelor's degree and her master's degree from UCLA.[7]

Nahabedian highlighted the following statement on her campaign website:
“ | Dear Friends, As your representative on the Board of Education, I have and will continue to strongly advocate for a safer learning environment at our schools, off-campus, and online. I have and will continuously work to ensure excellence in teaching and provide our students with all the opportunities they need to succeed. Working with community members, parents, teachers, and students, I have been a part of many accomplishments. Just in my last term, I was a part of milestones in GUSD history such as the expansion of foreign language academies in Spanish, Armenian, and Korean for middle schools; the implementation of positive intervention techniques, advocated for safer schools through an online system that helps prevent teen suicides, cyberbullying, and drug use; the modernization of our facilities; and a forward thinking movement to ensure technology, math and science are at the forefront of educating our children. In a changing world and newly recovering economy, we have succeeded in avoiding furloughs, reducing bullying, providing more opportunities for student success and ensuring that our students’ journeys are paved a first-class education and continuous support. We have much to be grateful for in Glendale Unified — awards and honors, business and community support, and terrific PTAs. But to continue our successes, and to continue to move forward in the right direction, we need an experienced advocate for children on the Board of Education. I will continue to advocate for safe schools, rigorous and relevant curriculum, and a first-class 21st-century education to the children of Glendale Unified, and I would be honored to have your support. Together, we can do better!
Sincerely, Nayiri[12] |
