Korman completed a survey conducted by The Sun Current:
“ | Q. Why are you seeking election to the Bloomington Board of Education?
Bloomington has an excellent school district with proven leadership in education. My husband Mark graduated from Bloomington schools, and we have three children proudly attending Bloomington schools. I am honored to be part of the Bloomington community and to work with such a dedicated group of parents, teachers and staff members in our schools. For the past four years on the board I have focused on student achievement, parent and community engagement, teacher and staff support and economic stability for our school district. It has been an honor to serve my community utilizing my experience, skills and training in education to support our Bloomington students and families. I am committed to work hard for the well-being of our city and to fight for every single student in Bloomington so that they can have access to opportunities and a world-class education. I will continue to support best practices for closing the achievement gap from pre-school to advance and college and career programs at the high school. I will work to find solutions to current financial challenges due to declining student enrollment and funding. I will also support meaningful staff professional development, special education programs, parent and family engagement opportunities and a strong communication system with our Bloomington residents. I will work hard for our Bloomington community in a fiscally responsible manner by making prudent decisions on behalf of Bloomington residents. Q. Are you satisfied with the board’s budget decisions for the 2015-16 school year? Bloomington schools managed to maintain financial stability for years. Unfortunately, financial challenges due to declining student enrollment and state funding that does not keep up with inflation caused budget cuts this year. I will work with the district’s administration and the city of Bloomington to find ways to make Bloomington an attractive city to new families and to maintain a stable student enrollment number in our public schools. I will put our students first and work hard to support our schools and our community in a fiscally responsible manner. Q. What could the district do to better meet the needs of its students? Bloomington has a strong school district committed to provide excellence in all our schools. Preservation and improvement of current programs and initiatives, and effective communication practices with our Bloomington residents, are important to continue to support our students and their families. I will work to make sure that our school district provides all our students with equal academic opportunities and skills to help them be successful.[6] |
