- My campaign is focused on improving 3rd grade reading scores. This is a key indicator of future success and we need to make it a priority for our community. Sentiment seems to be that "kids can't do it". The expectation is unfairly and quite unrelentingly on the teacher to "teach" better. The former is not true, and the latter is not realistic. This is a broader problem in our society and our community and it will take our entire community, teachers, parents, community partners, and all other stakeholders, to address it. It must start with the governance team that leads our district.
- We also need to improve funding. The formula the state uses to determine funding is flawed and insufficient. We need to create public awareness and work with local governments throughout the state to get this changed. To that end I will reach out to boards of education across the state to form a lobbying group that makes the legislature of the funding gaps created by the current model. Public influence on policy is critical in this effort and I will work to engage the public on this matter and urge their help and support.
- Finally we need to improve morale. That starts with better communication between the board of the teachers and staff we serve. We also need to make sure that we are showing our respect and appreciation with more than money. Teachers, staff, and administration all need to be present and included in decision and policy making for the district at every level.
