Choose a chamber below:

Elections for the Nevada Assembly were held on November 5, 2024. All 42 seats were up for election.

At the time of the election, Nevada was one of 10 states that had a divided government. Republican Joe Lombardo (R) held the governorship while Democrats held both chambers of the Nevada Legislature.

Following the election, Democrats maintained a 27-15 majority. Nevada remained a divided government, with a Republican holding the governorship and Democrats maintaining majorities in the state legislature.

At the time of election, Democrats held 26 seats to Republicans' 14, with two vacancies in seats previously held by Democrats. The two vacant seats were in District 7 and District 10. To return to a 28-member supermajority, Democrats needed to win every currently held seat in addition to both vacancies. To block the supermajority, Republicans needed to win one Democratic-held seat.

Nevada Current's April Corbin Girnus wrote, "The end goal for Nevada Republicans this year is not to wrest control of the Assembly away from Democrats. ... But a handful of races will determine whether Democrats maintain their current two-thirds supermajority in the lower chamber."[1] Lombardo endorsed and campaigned for candidates in certain districts. In an interview, he said, "The super-majority has to be prevented, whatever partisan side of the aisle you’re looking at. ... [We are proactive] in identifying candidates, supporting candidates and helping them be successful."[2]

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) included four Assembly races as part of a $10 million investment the party was making in state legislative races across the country.[3] Lombardo's Better Nevada PAC donated $5,000 to seven candidates in competitive districts.[4][5] To read more about campaign finance reports, click here.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Jessica Hill wrote, "If Democrats are successful in achieving supermajorities in the Assembly and Senate, they’d have enough votes to render the governor’s veto powers — and his legislative priorities — moot."[6] Lombardo set the state record for the most vetoes in a legislative session in 2023, vetoing 75 bills.[7]

Ballotpedia identified 13 Assembly battleground districts. As of October 3, 2024, Democrats represented 10 of these districts, while Republicans represented three districts. Click here to read more about the battleground elections.

Nevada was one of two states with the potential to have a veto-proof supermajority after the 2024 elections. The other state was Wisconsin. To read more about Ballotpedia's coverage of veto-proof legislatures and opposing party governors, click here.

The Nevada State Assembly was one of 85 state legislative chambers with elections in 2024. There are 99 chambers throughout the country.

Lisa Cole (R)

I am a dedicated, hardworking woman who is actively still running her small businesses—I will continue to do this important work even after I’m elected because Nevada has a citizen’s legislature. Governor Lombardo reached out to me last year to see if I would run for office. He believes in me and knows I have the skill set to represent you well in the Nevada Assembly. I’ve spent more than 20 years working to support industrial developers at Apex Industrial Park—bringing real jobs to our Valley. The City of North Las Vegas estimates a potential of up to 70,000 new jobs at Apex, depending on which companies locate there. I’ve worked tirelessly to support this development to enrich our community and provide opportunities to our children.

I am a mother who raised my son in the Clark County School District from 3rd grade on. I understand the importance of a strong educational system and will back Governor Lombardo’s education-first agenda. Talking to many of you at the door, I understand your concerns and will work hard to address them. You need a system you can trust to do the right thing for your children—I promise to bring as much accountability to the schools as a state legislator can.

It is critical to hold Assembly District 4 as a Republican seat. Our system of governance is built upon checks and balances. The governor is a check on the legislature through the veto power—unless both legislative houses have supermajorities (67% of the members). Supermajority status is precisely the goal for Nevada’s Democrat party. They are actively working to obtain veto-proof majorities in both the state senate and assembly. Our system of checks and balances will be rendered useless to curb bad policy if the governor has no veto power. And regardless of what some say, there will be no reason for Democrats to work across the aisle with their Republican counterparts if the Democrats hold veto-proof super majorities in both houses.
Lowering Costs: Ryan knows the impact rising costs have on working families. He’ll work to ensure that Nevadans can keep their hard-earned dollars and enjoy a high quality of life—by working to pass legislation to streamline supply chains, keeping energy costs down, & holding corporations accountable for taking advantage of people.

Keeping Our Communities Safe: Ryan will work across the aisle to ensure police & first responders have the tools they need to keep our communities safe.

Housing: For buyers and renters, housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable for many Nevadans. Ryan will work on policies & initiatives to support the development of workforce housing—& protect homeowners & renters from runaway HOAs.

Creating Jobs & Improving Workforce Development: Ryan will prioritize job creation and workforce development—giving hardworking Nevadans an edge in a competitive job market and more opportunities for high-paying careers. He’ll work with both parties to make smart investments to lure major employers to our state and continue to diversify Nevada’s economy.

Supporting Our Small Businesses: As an entrepreneur himself, Ryan knows the small business community is the heart of our economy. He’ll work to support his fellow small business owners—and lower bureaucratic burdens so they can succeed and thrive. He supports cutting red tape to streamline the startup process—and investing in business incubation programs for new business owners.

Protecting Our Fundamental Freedoms & Defending Liberty: Extreme partisan politicians are trying to take away our fundamental rights and freedoms. Ryan will stand up for individual liberties and reproductive freedom.

Ending Toxic Politics & Striving for Bipartisan Solutions: Ryan is proud to have worked with Democrats, Republicans, and Independents to make sure that the needs of people come first. In the Assembly, he’ll continue to reach across the aisle to find bipartisan solutions that serve Nevadans. For too long, the toxic nature of partisan politics has paralyzed our system of government. Ryan is committed to lowering the temperature of our political climate—and getting things done for our community.

Economic diversification, including robust programs for workforce development and workforce housing.

Public safety--recent soft-on-crime legislation has caused increased crime--our citizens feel less safe. We must address this issue.

Attainable housing for all those who wish to purchase a home--this should be addressed through increasing supply not top-down mandates.

Reduced regulatory burdens on businesses and developers--my skill set in helping developers overcome hurdles will help me craft legislation to reduce these burdens for all developers, so they can bring more jobs to our state.

And supporting our small and mid-sized business community is essential to keeping our economy as resilient as possible.

I look up to my mom. She's been an inspiration and source of strength throughout my life. Growing up, she worked multiple jobs to keep food on the table and clothes on our back. Her resilience and faith kept our family together. She's the most decent, hard working, honest, faithful, and compassionate human I know. She is my hero.

I believe it's important for our public officials to be honest, authentic, hard working, and accessible to the community they serve. Those closest to some of our state's most challenging problems are also closest to the solutions. Our elected officials must listen to the community and always work towards commonsense solutions that serve the best interests of our citizens, not just their political party. The level of toxic politics in our state (and nation) has reached a tipping point--our elected leaders have a responsibility to lower that temperature so we can get things done and improve people's lives.

I am open-minded and a good listener. Good policy can only come about when you hear all sides of the story. That requires a large amount of listening--really hearing what people are saying. Additionally, as an attorney dealing with contract drafting, I am skilled at looking for unintended consequences and trying to avoid them. I think broadly and will reach out to stakeholders, citizens, and other agencies that might be implicated in potential new laws so they can provide input.

It is critical to hold Assembly District 4 as a Republican seat to protect the veto and our foundational system of governance. Additionally, the role of governor is to work with the legislative caucus of his or her party to strategize regarding important policy objectives. The governor’s proposed budget is one of the first items the legislature considers when it meets every year. Thus, the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature is the fulfilment of fundamental constitutional systems and effectively working together for the good of Nevada.

Public safety is of utmost importance—rising property crimes have resulted from previous legislature’s policies, and we need to address the issues. Smash and grab crimes have created major issues for small and large businesses alike and created safety concerns for employees and shoppers. I will work with my colleagues to rein in soft-on crime laws and protect our citizens, as well as work to support our law enforcement officers in their efforts to keep us safe.

Economic diversification will continue to drive policy decisions for the next ten years—we will strive for a resilient economy that creates high-paying jobs in multiple industry sectors.

Housing availability needs to be addressed with a nuanced approach that includes a strong focus on supply. Housing strategies must include multiple types of homes—starter homes for people doing well, but not able to afford a house when it’s priced near half a million dollars; voucher-qualified homes for people with income less than the federally defined qualification level; multi-family housing for those just entering the workforce or in a situation where the time is not right to purchase a home; workforce housing focused on attracting and retaining people into particular employment sectors where Nevada has a strong need; etc. We must have a multi-pronged approach, rather than simple fixes that don’t really address actual needs.

Yes. Relationships are one of the most important aspects to creating effective policies for our state. When legislators have meaningful relationships, on both sides of the aisle, there is an atmosphere of trust. It’s easier to craft good policy when people trust that we are all focused on the same objective—laws that truly benefit Nevada and its citizens. Politics used to be dominated by “statesmen,” men and women who worked together for the good of the people, rather than for selfish or partisan reasons. We need to get back to those times.

Home means Nevada to me, and we need to make it a better place to live, work, go to school, and raise a family.

I will always stand in support of our first responders. As one myself, I know how hard it is to do the job. In the legislature, I will tackle the issues my colleagues are facing head-on so they can know that they have someone fighting for them in Carson City.

I am tired of going to the grocery store and being shocked by how much it costs for the necessities. As your representative, I will work to lower our taxes and reduce the prices of household goods.
As a veteran and current first responder, I will be a champion for my colleagues who need more support from our State government.

We owe it to our families and friends to make our country a safer place to live.

Economic prosperity is the American dream and is worth fighting for.

We have some work to do when it comes to education in Nevada.
Fiscal responsibility and transparency, educational opportunities to support children and adults, school choice, securing our borders and our communities, constituent accountability

The passing of JFK. I was in kindergarten and had never experienced such an immense feeling of loss. It was a time when some people had to sit at the back of the bus and couldn't go places that I could or drin out of the same fountains. I wanted to be worldly like John and Jackie, thinking some day I could live in the White House. TVs were rare, so we listened to baseball on the radio. We drove to the family orchard which was 25 miles away - back then a long drive - where we ate too much fruit and ran until we passed out. Our friends raised cows and Clydesdales. We didn't lock our doors and our neighbors watched out for us. Things were much simpler, but clearly not perfect.

Our district needs a teacher’s voice in the room where decisions are made and that is why I am running for reelection in Assembly District 25. From an underfunded education system to the ravages of climate change to the lack of affordable housing, we face many challenges in Nevada. At times, addressing these issues seems daunting; however, they are not insurmountable. With courage, honesty, and a willingness to try something new we can solve these problems and create a brighter future for all Nevadans.

As an Assemblymember and classroom teacher, I have always been a fierce advocate for my community and I fight every day to ensure that my constituents are heard in the halls of power. I am running for reelection to continue that fight for our community. Teachers face no shortage of challenges in the classroom and the work never ends. This has more than prepared me for the Nevada Legislature and I promise no one will work harder for our community than me.

I am the only candidate in this race who has been endorsed by our Washoe community. I have earned the endorsement of Washoe teachers, Washoe firefighters, Washoe law enforcement, and Washoe Workers.

I've also earned those endorsements from groups all across the state, but Washoe is our home and Washoe voices are the ones that matter most to me.

I've also earned the support of abortions rights groups like Planned Parenthood and Emily's List, environmental advocacy groups like the Nevada Conservation League and Sierra Club, and groups working on a whole host of issues to support our community like Make the Road Action and Silver State Equality. Everyone working to make Nevada brighter is on Team Selena.

I have the courage, honesty, and willingness to challenge the status quo that our community needs in an elected representative.

Joe Dalia (D)

I believe building a stronger public education system is critical to the future of our state. As a first-generation college student from a working-class family, I can attest to the transformational power of an education. I am committed to giving every kid the same opportunity I had growing up.

I am committed to diversifying and growing Nevada’s economy. Our reliance on tourism puts our economy in a precarious position when tough times hit. I will fight to ensure we are a competitive landing spot for new businesses and industries that will bring durable, high-paying jobs to our community.

I will always protect civil liberties, including a woman’s right to choose. There is no right more fundamental than the right to bodily autonomy, and as a father of three young girls, I will never compromise on protecting their rights and access to reproductive healthcare.
Improving education outcomes for students through safe effective schools.

Annette has devoted her life to teaching children and fighting to ensure they have every resource available to them, regardless of their circumstances, It is nearly impossible for students to learn in an environment they don't feel safe in. She will push for legislation that keeps our schools safe, and helps support students through high quality instruction and needed interventions, in order to graduate fully prepared and be successful, productive community members.

Economic security for families Families are living paycheck to paycheck and resorting to increased credit card debt. Nevada families need an additional $13,296 to afford the same standard of living they had in January 2021. We need to provide relief, where we can, to give residents the breathing room to regain their financial footing. This means growing and diversifying our economy to provide long-term economic stability and increased wages. Additionally, we must look to provide short-term help through targeted tax relief options. We can't solve the inflation crisis created by our federal government, but we can work to ease the pain and help our citizens that are in need.

Access to health care for families and children

Nevada ranks near the bottom in both health services and mental health support. The need to prioritize incentives to attract the needed professionals to ensure we can deliver the services our communities desperate need. My plan would include a workforce signing bonus for hires willing to move to Nevada and tuitions assistance for students willing to pursue careers in our most needed fields.
Economic Empowerment: I am committed to fostering economic growth and creating opportunities for small businesses to thrive, ultimately strengthening our local economy and providing more jobs for our community.

Education Excellence: I prioritize education excellence by advocating for increased teacher pay, better resources for schools, and innovative programs to ensure that every child receives a quality education and is prepared for success in the future.

Community Engagement: I believe in the power of community collaboration and engagement. As your candidate, I will listen to your concerns, work tirelessly to address them, and ensure that your voices are heard in the decision-making process, fostering a stronger and more united community for us all.

Education, Health Care, Economic Development Democrats, Republicans, Independents, all want a better future for our state. We may disagree on the solutions, but we know the problems. We need a better education system, better healthcare, a focus on public safety, and a more diverse economy. As your assemblywoman, Annette will not support the Republican idea or the Democrat idea, but the best idea for all Nevadans.

As a mother of four and a small business owner, I'm deeply invested in key public policy areas. Education is paramount; every child deserves quality schooling. Economic development is vital; small businesses drive our community. I also champion our veteran and elderly community—they're often overlooked despite their invaluable contributions. I advocate for policies that honor and support them. It's more than politics; it's about caring for those who've given so much.
The role of Assemblywoman in Henderson, Nevada, holds a unique and vital position within the state government and legal system. While experience in politics is valuable, it's equally crucial to bring diverse perspectives and real-world expertise to the table. As someone deeply rooted in family, business, and community engagement, I understand the daily challenges and aspirations of our constituents on a personal level. This allows me to approach legislative matters with empathy, practicality, and a genuine commitment to serving the best interests of our community. Furthermore, my background in business equips me with the skills to navigate complex issues, foster economic growth, and advocate for policies that support small businesses and working families. By bringing a fresh perspective and a steadfast dedication to people-centered governance, I believe I can make a meaningful impact as Assemblywoman, ensuring that the voices of Henderson residents are heard and valued in the halls of government.
I've always looked up to someone very special in my life Belinda Hightower, the proud owner of Hightower Private Housekeeping right here in Henderson, NV. She's not just a family friend; she's been a steadfast rock and mentor since my childhood. Belinda's unwavering faith, strength, and compassion have inspired me every step of the way. I aspire to follow her example of grace, resilience, and dedication to making a positive impact in our community. She's truly a blessing in my life, and I'm forever grateful for her guidance and support.
For those seeking to understand my political philosophy, I recommend exploring narratives that emphasize integrity, justice, and community empowerment. While I'm drawn to classic television shows like "Matlock," "Murder She Wrote," and "Gunsmoke," which depict principled characters navigating complex moral dilemmas, my reading preferences lean towards educational and motivational literature like "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." These works offer insights into financial literacy and personal growth, reflecting my belief in self-improvement and empowerment. Additionally, as a reader of the Bible, I find inspiration in passages like Proverbs 11:3, which underscores the importance of integrity in leadership: "The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity." This scripture encapsulates my commitment to ethical leadership and serving with integrity.

Honesty, Accountability, Integrity, Open-Mindedness, and Compassion
Integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to serving the community are the most important characteristics for an elected official. Integrity ensures that leaders act ethically and transparently, earning the trust of the public. Accountability holds officials responsible for their actions, ensuring they remain accountable to the people they serve. People make mistakes, but learning from them demonstrates humility and growth. A genuine commitment to serving the community means prioritizing the needs of constituents above personal interests or political agendas. These principles form the foundation of effective and responsible leadership, fostering trust, collaboration, and positive outcomes for all.
Annette has built relationships in the community her whole life. She has been an advocate for improving outcomes for Nevada children and families and worked across the aisle in the past two legislative sessions. She listens, learns, finds common ground and is solution oriented. This will make for a successful legislator.

Certainly! As someone who values organization, I prioritize structuring tasks and managing responsibilities efficiently. While I may not be perfectly organized at all times, I actively strive to maintain a balance and keep things in order. This adaptability allows me to navigate various tasks and challenges effectively. Coupled with my other qualities like strong communication skills and strategic thinking, I believe my moderate level of organization, combined with dedication and resilience, contributes to my ability to excel in the role of an officeholder.
The core responsibilities of someone elected to this office revolve around representation, advocacy, and stewardship. Firstly, they must represent the diverse interests and needs of their constituents, acting as a voice for the community in legislative matters. Secondly, they are tasked with advocating for policies and initiatives that advance the well-being and prosperity of the community, addressing issues such as education, economic development, infrastructure, and social welfare. Finally, they are responsible for stewardship, ensuring that public resources are managed wisely and transparently, and that the public trust is upheld. Ultimately, the elected official must serve as a dedicated and effective leader, working tirelessly to improve the lives of those they represent.

I’d like to leave my community and my state better than I found them, and I’d like my kids to be proud of their dad for the work I did.
The legacy I aspire to leave is one of resilience, faith, and growth despite adversity. Despite facing challenges such as heartache, betrayal, and neglect from those close to me, I've persevered by relying on my faith and staying steadfast in God's shadow. Through these trials, I've embraced the concept of "failing forward," learning from setbacks and using them as stepping stones toward personal and spiritual growth. My legacy is not defined by the challenges I've faced but by my ability to overcome them with grace and determination, leaving behind a testament to the power of faith and perseverance.
Oh, the excitement of becoming a parent for the first time! I vividly remember the birth of my first child—it was an absolute whirlwind of emotions and joy. I was 24 years old, bursting with anticipation and wonder as I held my precious bundle of joy for the very first time. It was a moment that changed my life forever, and I'll cherish it always!

I entertained guests, cracked jokes, and brought smiles to faces for a solid 2-3 years. It was a blast, although I have to admit, the jester hat did get a little snug after a while. But hey, age, weight, or month of birth, I always brought my A-game and kept the laughter flowing!
My favorite book is "Living Paycheck to Monday" by Dr. Lynn Richardson. This book resonates with me because it offers practical and insightful advice on managing finances and achieving financial freedom. Dr. Richardson's approachable writing style and actionable tips make complex financial concepts easy to understand and implement in everyday life. It's a resource that has helped me gain a deeper understanding of personal finance and empowered me to take control of my financial future.
A significant struggle in my life has been the enduring challenges I faced from childhood through adulthood. I encountered numerous situations and obstacles that no one should have to endure alone. However, I've always approached these trials with resilience and a fighting spirit, refusing to let them defeat me. Despite the hardships, I've persevered without dwelling on complaints or self-pity. Instead, I've relied on my inner strength and determination to navigate through life's difficulties, emerging stronger and more resilient with each obstacle overcome.
Among the responsibilities of the Assemblywoman role in Nevada, I consider several to be particularly important. Firstly, I prioritize representing the diverse voices and needs of our community in legislative decisions, ensuring that everyone's concerns are heard and addressed. Secondly, I am committed to advocating for policies that promote economic prosperity, job creation, and business development, recognizing the vital role of small businesses in our local economy. Additionally, I place a strong emphasis on improving educational opportunities and outcomes for our children, as well as fostering community engagement and collaboration to tackle pressing issues facing residents. Overall, I believe that by focusing on these key priorities, I can effectively serve as a voice for our community and work towards building a brighter future for all.
Yes, the Assemblywoman role encompasses several lesser-known powers and responsibilities that are crucial for effective governance. For instance, Assembly members play a significant role in shaping state legislation by introducing bills, proposing amendments, and participating in committee hearings to review and debate proposed laws. Additionally, they have the authority to represent their constituents' interests through constituent services, assisting individuals with navigating state agencies and accessing resources. Moreover, Assembly members have a duty to serve as liaisons between their communities and the state government, advocating for local needs and priorities at the legislative level. By raising awareness of these important functions, we can empower constituents to engage more actively in the democratic process and hold their elected representatives accountable for their actions.
While previous experience in government or politics can provide valuable insights and understanding of the legislative process, it is not necessarily a prerequisite for effective leadership in this office. What truly matters is a genuine commitment to serving the community, a strong understanding of the issues facing constituents, and the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders to find innovative solutions. Experience in fields such as business, education, or community advocacy can bring fresh perspectives and valuable skills to the role, enriching the representation and enhancing the ability to address the diverse needs of the community. Ultimately, a dedication to transparency, integrity, and responsive governance is paramount, regardless of one's prior political experience.
In this role, it's more about connecting with people on a personal level, listening to their concerns, and finding practical solutions together. While skills and expertise are important, being approachable, empathetic, and down-to-earth is what truly makes a difference in serving our community. It's about understanding the everyday challenges people face and being willing to roll up our sleeves and work alongside them to make positive changes. So, while skills like communication and problem-solving are crucial, it's the genuine human connection and willingness to listen that really count.

One of the greatest challenges will be the economic impacts of AI and automation. As AI tools rapidly develop, businesses will be able to achieve the same productivity with leaner staffing. Many jobs could be permanently eliminated. It will be incumbent upon us as state leaders to ensure we’re bringing new opportunities to workers that are displaced, giving them access to training resources to increase their qualifications, and establishing a sufficient safety net to keep folks afloat.

I believe that financial transparency and government accountability are essential pillars of a healthy democracy. Transparency ensures that taxpayers know how their money is being spent, fostering trust and accountability in government institutions. It allows citizens to hold elected officials accountable for their actions and decisions, promoting integrity and preventing corruption. As an advocate for responsible governance, I support measures to enhance financial transparency, such as open budgeting processes and accessible public records. Additionally, I believe in robust oversight mechanisms to ensure government accountability, including regular audits and effective checks and balances. By prioritizing transparency and accountability, we can strengthen our democracy, build public trust, and ensure that government serves the best interests of all constituents.

Healthcare - Nevada's healthcare has many opportunities for improvement. There aren't enough physicians (we are 48th in the country for number of doctors per capita), and we need more providers of all kinds including nurses and other ancillary staff. We need to focus on making Nevada more welcoming of medical personnel, as well as pipeline programs to encourage Nevada's youth to be educated in the medical field.

Education - Nevada's education for our children is failing. We need to closely analyze where the education funding is going. We need to work toward better pay for teachers, smaller classrooms, and improved graduation rates. Rebecca believes parents are the best judge of their children's needs, and as such she believes strongly in school choice.

Economy - As a life-long conservative, Rebecca believes in small government, decreased taxes and decreased burdensome regulation for business in Nevada.
Sharifa supports our officers and first responders, and the sacrifices that they make everyday to keep us safe. Sharifa wants to assist our first responders and pass legislation that will keep our communities safe, and protect our most vulnerable citizens. Sharifa will also push legislation that will provide funding, training, and support to our police, firefighters, and public safety agencies so that they can continue to protect us and themselves the best way possible.

Sharifa believes that everyone should have access to quality and affordable healthcare. As a dentist for many years Sharifa has been a staunch advocate for healthcare reform because no one should be denied access to their basic healthcare needs because they simply can’t afford it. In the legislature Sharifa is prepared to support and push legislation that will lower prescription drug costs, and prioritize all forms of healthcare including mental health. She is ready to take on Big Pharma and prioritize what’s best for Nevada over corporations. Sharifa is also committed to investing in Nevada's healthcare system and infrastructure to increase the quality of healthcare that is provided in Nevada.

Sharifa Wahab is a pro-choice candidate and a supporter of women's reproductive rights. She believes that what a woman discusses with her doctor has no place in politics and that includes matters of abortion and contraception. Sharifa is committed to supporting women’s reproductive freedoms and in the legislature will ensure that Nevada remains a state that respects every woman’s right to make her decisions.

Transparency and a genuine interest in helping the people in Nevada to prosper. Officials should be willing to study the issues and negotiate to do what's right for Nevadans. There shouldn't be any ulterior motives for Nevada's civilian legislative members to serve.

First and most important, office holders are responsible to do what's right for their district constituents as well as the state of Nevada. Officials should be open to hearing both sides and data before making decisions, and should hold to the principles they were elected on. Officials are ultimately responsible for doing what's best for Nevada and not for what benefits the official.

I believe all kinds of experience is beneficial, however Nevada has a civilian legislature which enables people from diverse backgrounds to come together to help all Nevadans. By spending most of their time working and living in their communities, they are the most able to speak to issues in their district and in their state. Life-long politicians could easily lose touch of the important perspective that real world experience provides.

I do believe that but it is also beneficial for legislators to come from all backgrounds and bring diverse views to Carson City. From healthcare, education, small businesses, and anywhere in between. These different perspectives are critical to ensuring we pass good legislation in the state legislature.

Absolutely. Being a legislature, by it's very nature, requires that people on both sides work together to do what is right for constituents. By taking the time to listen to both sides of every issues, it will enable us as lawmakers to understand how laws and budgeting will affect all constituents. I believe being able to sit down and work with people on both sides will make for the most balanced and beneficial legislation possible in most cases.

Improve students’ education by protecting parents’ voices, supporting teachers, and promoting school choice.

Promote strong, diverse economic development –including in the gaming and tourism industries – to bring good-paying jobs to our district.

Cut regulations on businesses so it’s easier to run a company, employ people, and drive our economy forward.
I am extremely passionate about education. My mother was a school teacher in Clark County for over 24 years at inner city schools. I understand the issue very intimately. It is a complex problem to solve to increase our education metrics for our state, but we can start by passing legislation to increase school choice through the opportunity scholarship program already in place in Nevada. We also have to look at the education system as an essential part of our infrastructure. If successful companies want to make Nevada their home, we need to make sure our education system meets the performance expectations of those companies' workers so making the move to Nevada will be the most attractive option for them.

I am a huge believer in financial transparency and government accountability. It is the job of our elected officials to make sure that tax payer dollars are being spent in an efficient manner. If they are not then the people responsible for the failures should be held accountable. In business, if a project goes over budget and over the due date, the person/people responsible face consequences. It should be the same for government.

This section contains data on state legislative primary election competitiveness in Nevada. These totals include data from all regularly-scheduled House and Senate elections. For more information about Ballotpedia's competitiveness analysis of state legislative elections, please click here.

Post-filing deadline analysis

The following analysis covers all state legislative districts up for election in Nevada in 2024. Information below was calculated on May 29, 2024, and may differ from information shown in the table above due to candidate replacements and withdrawals after that time.

There were 52 state legislative seats up for election in Nevada in 2024. Across those, 12 incumbents (nine Democrats and three Republicans) did not file to run for re-election. That was below the average number of retirements per election cycle since Ballotpedia began tracking this data in 2010 (15.9). In 2022, 19 incumbents (seven Democrats and 12 Republicans) did not run for re-election.

Eight incumbents out of the 37 running (21.6%) faced primary challengers. That is lower than the average number of contested incumbents in primary elections since 2010 (10.3). The year with the highest number of contested incumbents was 2016 when 17 of 41 incumbents (41.5%) faced primary opponents. The year with the fewest was 2010, when five of 26 incumbents (19.2%) faced primary opponents.

The total number of contested primaries (with more than one candidate) was 33 (16 Democratic and 17 Republican). This was lower than the average number of contested primaries from 2010-2022 (37.7). In total, 31.7% of Nevada state legislative primaries in 2024 were contested - lower than the average rate of contested primaries from 2010-2022 (35.9). </noinclude>

Noteworthy ballot measures

See also: Nevada 2024 ballot measures

Nevada had seven ballot measures on the November 5, 2024, ballot in Nevada. Two notable ones included the Nevada Right to Abortion Initiative, which was designed to provide for a state constitutional right to an abortion, and Question 3, designed to change Nevada's primaries to use ranked-choice voting.

Observers and officials commented on whether the amendments would increase turnout statewide.

  • David Byler of Noble Predictive Insights, a polling firm said: “Abortion is an issue that brings Democrats to the polls – and that high enthusiasm has allowed them to beat Republicans in low-turnout special elections... And that is an advantage for Democrats.”[38]
  • David Damore, a political science professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas said: “When abortion rights are on the ballot, it mobilizes turnout among supporters that crosses party lines.”[39]
  • 538's Nathaniel Rakich said: "But while interest in these measures will undoubtedly be high this November, there just isn't much evidence that they'll turn out many voters who weren't already going to vote anyway... in every state with an abortion-related ballot measure in 2022, more votes were cast for the office at the top of the ticket than for the ballot measure."[40]
  • Former Clark County GOP Chair David Gibbs said of the abortion amendment: “I’m not hearing much about it... Is it going to drive people to the polls? It might, but there’s a good probability that those people were going to vote anyway.”[41]
  • Sondra Cosgrove, director of Vote Nevada, said of Question 3: “The largest group of voters is already saying, ‘You know, I’m not really cool with either of the parties right now’ but then they feel like they’re being shut out at the same time... People can see that the system’s kind of gummed-up and doesn’t work very well, so they’re interested in reforms to our election processes.”[41]
  • Gibbs disagreed with Cosgrove's assessment on voter interest in the specific amendment. The Epoch Times' John Haughey said: "Mr. Gibbs agreed, except he said the election reform Nevadans are interested in is not ranked choice voting. Unlike 2022 when it only passed by 53 percent, he said, Question 3 will face stiff opposition in 2024 with coalescing groups prepared to show “how much this is going to both complicate and muddy the waters in our elections,” predicting the “voters of Nevada will reject” ranked voting.[41]

Question 6

See also: Nevada Question 6, Right to Abortion Initiative (2024)

A "yes" vote supported providing for a state constitutional right to an abortion, providing for the state to regulate abortion after fetal viability, except where medically indicated to "protect the life or health of the pregnant patient."

A "no" vote opposed providing for a state constitutional right to an abortion.

Question 3

See also: Nevada Question 3, Top-Five Ranked-Choice Voting Initiative (2024)

A "yes" vote supported establishing open top-five primaries and ranked-choice voting for general elections, which would apply to congressional, gubernatorial, state executive official, and state legislative elections.

A "no" vote opposed establishing open top-five primaries and ranked-choice voting for general elections, which would apply to congressional, gubernatorial, state executive official, and state legislative elections.

Legislative referrals

See also: Legislative referral

A legislative referral, or legislatively referred ballot measure, is a ballot measure that appears on the ballot due to a vote of the state legislature. A legislative referral can be a constitutional amendment, state statute, or bond issue.

As of the 2024 election, a simple majority was required during two successive legislative sessions for the Nevada State Legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot. That amounted to a minimum of 22 votes in the Nevada State Assembly and 11 votes in the Nevada State Senate, assuming no vacancies. Amendments did not require the governor's signature to be referred to the ballot.

At the time of the 2024 election, Democrats held a 13-7 majority in the Senate and a 26-14 majority in the Assembly. Democrats needed to lose two Senate seats and four Assembly seats to lose the ability to pass legislative referrals without Republican votes. Republicans needed to win four Senate seats and eight Assembly seats to have the ability.

Process to become a candidate

DocumentIcon.jpg See statutes: Title 24, Chapter 293 of the Nevada Revised Statutes

A candidate in Nevada may access the ballot in one of three ways: as a major party candidate, as a minor party candidate, or as an independent candidate. Write-in candidates are not permitted in this state. Voters can only cast a vote for candidates whose names appear on the ballot.[44]

Major party candidates

A major party candidate must have been affiliated with his or her party by December 31 of the year preceding the election. If a candidate changes his or her affiliation after that date, he or she can no longer run as a major party candidate.[45]

Major party candidates are nominated via primary election. There are two ways in which a major party candidate may be placed on the primary election ballot:[46]

  • by filing a declaration of candidacy and paying the filing fee during the candidate filing period, which begins on the first Monday in March and ends on the second Friday in March following that Monday; the declaration must include the following:[47]
    • the residential address of the candidate, which must be in the appropriate district of the state corresponding to the office being sought
    • a copy of a government-issued photo ID, a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or document issued by a government entity in order to prove the residence address listed on the declaration
    • the candidate's Social Security number, license number, or state identification number
  • by having 10 or more registered voters file a certificate of candidacy on behalf of any registered voter they wish to nominate as a candidate for their major party; this must be done no earlier than the first Monday in February and no later than the first Monday in March preceding the primary election (if nominated in this way, the candidate must file an acceptance of candidacy with the required filing fee during the candidate filing period)[47][48]

The filing fees mentioned above vary according to the office being sought and can be paid by cash, cashier's check, or certified check. Personal checks, campaign checks, and credit cards are not acceptable forms of payment. The filing fees are detailed in the table below.[49][50][51]

Filing fees
Office sought Filing fee
United States Senator $500
United States Representative and Governor of Nevada $300
Nevada state executive offices other than governor $200
Nevada Senator and Nevada Assemblyman $100

If the candidate is seeking office in the United States House of Representatives or Nevada State Legislature in a district within a single county, he or she must file with the county clerk of that county. Candidates for all other offices must file with the Nevada Secretary of State.[52]

Minor party candidates

Minor parties must file a list of candidates with the Nevada Secretary of State before any minor party candidates can file individually. This list must be signed in the presence of a notary public by the party officer named to do so on the minor party's certificate of existence. The list must be filed during the candidate filing period, which starts on the first Monday in March and ends on the second Friday in March following that Monday.[53][54]

Once the candidate list has been submitted to the Nevada Secretary of State, a minor party candidate can file his or her declaration of candidacy and pay the required filing fee (detailed above). These must be filed during the candidate filing period. If the candidate is seeking office in the United States House of Representatives or Nevada State Legislature in a district within a single county, he or she must file with the county clerk of that county. Candidates for all other offices must file with the Nevada Secretary of State.[52][53][54]

Minor party candidates are not permitted to participate in the primary election. Minor parties nominate their candidates to be placed on the general election ballot and may field only one candidate for each office appearing on the ballot.[55]

Independent candidates

Independent candidates may run only in the general election. Independent candidates must petition to be placed on the ballot. This may be done in one of two ways:[56][57]

  • by submitting a petition containing signatures of registered voters equal in number to at least 1 percent of the total votes cast at the last general election for the same office the candidate seeks
  • by submitting a petition containing 250 signatures of registered voters if the candidate seeks statewide office, or containing 100 registered voters' signatures if the candidate seeks any other office

Before circulating a petition, a candidate must file a copy of the petition with the Nevada Secretary of State after January 2 of the year of the election. The petition may be circulated as soon as the copy has been filed. The completed petition must then be filed with the counties where the petition was circulated in order to be verified. In order to have the petitions verified in time to file them during the candidate filing period, which starts on the first Monday in March and ends on the third Friday in June preceding the general election, the petitions must be submitted to the counties 10 business days before the last day of the candidate filing period. A verified petition may then be filed with the declaration of candidacy and filing fee with the Nevada Secretary of State unless the candidate is seeking office in a district existing entirely within one county. Such candidates file all documents and fees with the county clerk of the appropriate county.[56][57][58][59][52]

  36. Ballotpedia defines an incumbent as retiring if the incumbent did not file for office or filed for office but withdrew, was disqualified, or otherwise left a race in a manner other than losing the primary, primary runoff, or convention. If an incumbent runs as a write-in candidate, Ballotpedia does not consider them to be retiring. If an incumbent runs in the same chamber for a different seat, Ballotpedia does not consider them to be retiring.
  37. Ballotpedia defines a seat as open if the incumbent did not file to run for re-election or filed but withdrew and did not appear on any ballot for his or her seat. If the incumbent withdrew from or did not participate in the primary but later chose to seek re-election to his or her seat as a third party or independent candidate, the seat would not be counted as open. If the incumbent retired or ran for a different seat in the same chamber, his or her original seat would be counted as open unless another incumbent from the same chamber filed to run for that seat, in which case it would not be counted as open due to the presence of an incumbent.
