Nevada state senator comes out during floor speech
April 30, 2013
By Geoff Pallay

CARSON CITY, Nevada: Nevada State Senator Kelvin Atkinson (D) came out during a floor speech earlier last week. This was the first time that many of his Senate peers found out the first-term Senator is gay.[1]
The speech occurred during a debate about gay marriage. Legislators were discussing legislation that would repeal the state's same-sex marriage ban, pending a public vote in 2016.[2]
According to the Las Vegas Sun, the speech helped push lawmakers to approve the measure, which will require another approval by the legislature in 2015 before it could go before voters in 2016.[3][4]
The Democratic Party currently controls the Nevada State Senate.
