New Carolina
New Carolina | |
Basic facts |
New Carolina is a Columbia, South Carolina-based entity begun in 2004 with the self-described goal of “working to increase per capita income and enhance South Carolina’s economic competitiveness through a cluster development strategy.” Also known as South Carolina’s Council on Competitiveness, New Carolina calls itself a public-private partnership, though it would appear a majority of the organization's funding comes from public sources.
Criticism
One critic described the organization's strategy as being "centered around spending more taxpayer money on our failed public schools, more taxpayer money on our bloated and inefficient higher ed system, more taxpayer money on 'distressed areas' of the state and more taxpayer money on new government programs."[1]
Leadership
Executive Director George Fletcher’s total compensation rose to $156,494 from $140,000, a 12-percent increase, between FY2006 and FY2008, federal tax returns show.
Finances
Between fiscal year 2006 through fiscal year 2008, New Carolina received more than $900,000 in government funding, according to its federal tax returns for those years. At least $800,000 of that money came from the South Carolina Department of Commerce in budget provisos.[2][3]
In addition, the 2008 annual report listed among New Carolina donors several public entities, including the University of South Carolina, Trident Technical College and the South Carolina State Ports Authority. Not only is Clemson University listed, but New Carolina also received sponsorship from the Clemson University Foundation, the Clemson College of Business and Behavioral Science, and the Clemson College of Engineering and Science.[4]
