A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. New Jersey utilizes a semi-closed primary process, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is generally limited to registered party members. Unaffiliated voters can register as party members at the polls on primary election day. Otherwise, a voter must indicate his or her party preference (e.g., via an updated voter registration) no later than the 55th day preceding the primary in order to vote in that party's primary.[1]

For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.

This is one of 51 open races for the U.S. House of Representatives this year in which an incumbent is not running for re-election. Across the country, 21 Democrats and 30 Republicans are not running for re-election. In 2024, 45 incumbents — 24 Democrats and 21 Republicans — did not seek re-election.

This page focuses on New Jersey's 12th Congressional District Democratic primary. For more in-depth information on the district's Republican primary and the general election, see the following pages:

Key Messages

A Fighter Against Fascism I believe the Democratic Party is missing one crucial element right now — the willingness to fight back against fascism of MAGA Republicans, with strength and clarity. I will be that fighter, ready to stand up against extremism and defend our democracy.

Stronger Voices, Stronger Messaging We need more leaders who can clearly and fearlessly communicate our values. I will bring bold, unapologetic messaging that inspires people, counters misinformation, and builds trust in the Democratic Party. We also need younger, more passionate voices. Right now, 31 Democrats in the House of Representatives are over 75 years old. The Party needs fresh energy and perspective to help lift its approval rating, which currently sits at just 27%.

Breaking Barriers for Justice and Equality As a 36-year-old openly gay African American man, small business owner, and college professor, I know what it means to work hard and fight for fairness. If elected, I will make history as the first Black openly gay man to serve in Congress from New Jersey — and I will use that platform to champion justice, equality, and opportunity for all Americans.

Key Messages

Iziah's campaign is focused on lowering prices of housing and utilities, ending medical debt, and reigning in the power of big tech by pushing protections for children and teens and halting all data center construction. Iziah believes that we must abolish ICE, end genocide, and ban stock trading in Congress.

We must push back against the threat to our democracy that is the Trump Administration and MAGA. We must have fair elections, safe transfers of power, curtail corruption, and put an end to the idea that domestic and international law applies to some and not all. To truly oppose Trump, NJ-12 needs a Congressperson who isn't tied to corruption systems and corporate donors.

Beyond serving as opposition to Trump, Democrats must provide real solutions to the problems facing Americans. The time for machine politics and empty platitudes is over. Iziah is offering bold leadership for the people of New Jersey's 12th district, backed by and grounded in the working class.
