New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Barry Albin retired on July 7, 2022, upon reaching the state's mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[1] Albin's replacement will be Governor Phil Murphy's (D) fourth nominee to the seven-member supreme court.
In New Jersey, state supreme court justices are selected through direct gubernatorial appointment. Justices are appointed directly by the governor without the use of a nominating commission.[2] There are five states that use this selection method. On May 13, 2023, Governor Phil Murphy nominated Michael Noriega to serve on the New Jersey Supreme Court.[3]

Noteworthy events
- August 15, 2022: Chief Justice Stuart Rabner appointed senior presiding judges of the appellate division Clarkson Fisher, Jack Sabatino, and Douglas M. Fasciale to the court temporarily to fill three vacancies on the New Jersey Supreme Court.[5]

About the court
Founded in 1776, the New Jersey Supreme Court is the state's court of last resort and has seven judgeships. The current chief of the court is Stuart Rabner.
About Justice Barry Albin

Justice Barry Albin joined the New Jersey Supreme Court on September 18, 2022. He was appointed to the court by Governor James McGreevey (D).
Before serving on the state supreme court, Albin worked as a partner at the law firm of Wilentz, Goldman and Spitzer in Woodbridge, New Jersey. He had previously worked as an assistant prosecutor in Passaic and Middlesex Counties and as a deputy attorney general in the appellate section of the N.J. Division of Criminal Justice.[6]
Albin received a bachelor's degree from Rutgers College in 1973 and a J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1976.[6]
