Jurisdiction

This court holds the following jurisdiction:[1]

Superior Court of New Jersey and Miscellaneous - Post-1948 general jurisdiction over all cases. Includes the Law Division, Chancery Division, Probate Division, Appellate Division and county/regional vicinages. Probate Division responsible for post-1900 estate filings.[2]

The 371 judges of the New Jersey Superior Court are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the New Jersey Senate. Newly appointed judges serve for seven years, after which they may be reappointed to serve until age 70.[3]

The chief judges of the superior courts are designated by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve indefinitely.[3]

Qualifications
To be eligible to serve on the superior courts, one needs only to have practiced law in New Jersey for at least 10 years and be under the age of 70. Retirement at 70 is mandatory.[3]
