New Jersey: The New Jersey court system has put two searchable indexes online for state citizens in April, one listing civil judgments and one listing attorneys.
The civil judgment index includes information on judgment liens regarding: "civil, criminal, and family cases, administrative agency judgments, defaulted child support payments, Motor Vehicles Commission surcharge debts, certificates of indebtedness from the office of the Public Defender, and unpaid probation fines." Prior to its creation, people desiring such information had to travel to court houses or court clerk's offices to receive it.[1]
The state attorneys index lists more than 80,000 private and government attorneys, judges, and in-house counsel licensed to practice in New Jersey, with specific information regarding: "date of admission to the bar, the status to practice law in New Jersey, and the county and municipality of the business office of practicing attorneys."[2]
Judge Glenn A. Grant, acting administrative director of the New Jersey courts, stated that the judgment index was "one more way the courts are improving customer service" and the attorney index would allow customers to be "assured that the attorney they have hired is licensed and eligible to practice in New Jersey."[1][2]
