State analysis

Partisan balance

A total of two Democrats represent New Jersey in the Senate. Andrew Kim (D), Curtis Bashaw (R), and four other candidates ran in New Jersey's U.S. Senate election on November 5, 2024. The election filled the Senate seat formerly held by Bob Menendez Sr. (D), who first took office in 2006. Menendez resigned on August 20, 2024, and withdrew from this race, following his indictment on federal corruption charges. Gov. Phil Murphy (D) appointed George Helmy (D) on September 9, 2024 to serve until the election results were certified.[1] There are 47 Democrats, 49 Republicans, and four independents. Three independents caucus with the Democratic Party, and one other counts towards the Democratic majority for committee purposes.

A total of eight Democrats and three Republicans represent New Jersey in the House. Republicans have a 220-212 majority with three vacancies.
