New Mexico Representative passes away during first term
August 26, 2013
Santa Fe, New Mexico: Rep. Stephen P. Easley (D) passed away on August 14, 2013, from complications caused by an infection. Sworn in on January 15, he chaired the Enrolling and Engrossing - A Committee, while serving on the Energy and Natural Resources and Taxation and Revenue Committees. Easley is survived by his wife, Sue, and two daughters. The process to fill the remainder of Easley's term has two steps. First, county commissioners in the four counties that Easley represented will nominate replacements, and Gov. Susana Martinez (R) will appoint one nominee to Easley's seat. The commissions of the four counties are split, with two having Democratic majorities and two having Republican ones, so Martinez will likely have choices from both parties.[1]
