New York Court of Appeals changes state bar requirements

Albany, NY On Tuesday, January 10, the State of New York Court of Appeals announced changes to its state bar examination requirements for the first time in over ten years. The changes were proposed by the New York State Board of Law Examiners and attempt to account for changes in legal education including the increased use of externships and clinical education. The changes take place on April 1 and will allow students to complete up to 30 credit hours in field-placement programs or externships, ten higher than before and up to 12 credit hours of distance education. Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman commented on the new rules, stating "We are bringing legal education up to speed in terms of the world in 2012. We are trying to be more flexible and bringing the rules up to date with modern realities of legal education and the practice of law."[1]
