New York Judiciary proposes $100 million in budget cuts

ALBANY, New York The New York State court system, under heavy criticism from Governor Andrew Cuomo, has further slashed their budget, cutting an additional $100 million. Measures include a hiring freeze, potential lay offs and funding cuts for local courts. The proposed cuts still account for only a 4% reduction in the court's budget, which is less than the 10% Cuomo requested. However, Chief Justice Jonathan Lippman feels additional cuts can be made by passing bills which would eliminate the current paper filing system and require mandatory electronic filing and measures to consolidate the state court systems. The current proposed cuts come on the heals of an increased case load revolving around foreclosures and other economic problems and nearly thirteen years without raises for judges.
