New York considers bill to raise judicial retirement age

Albany, New York: The New York State Legislature ended its 2011 session with a pending bill that would raise the mandatory retirement age of Court of Appeals judges from 70 to 80. The constitutional amendment, A8469/S5827 would permit Court of Appeals judges to stay on the bench for an additional ten years but would prevent them from being reassigned or appointed after 70. In addition, the bill would permit Supreme Court justices an additional two, two year extensions to be approved by the courts thus raising their retirement age to 80 as well. The bill must still be approved by the upcoming 2012 legislature and will eventually require a statewide ballot for ratification.[1]
