New York: Last week the state's court administrators laid off 367 nonjudicial employees. The layoffs, the likes of which haven't occurred since 1992, are a result of state budget cuts ordered by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The judicial branch will need to reduce its budget by $170 million, which comes from its total budget of $2.7 billion.[1] The state is exploring many avenues to close a projected $10 billion budget deficit for 2011-2012.[2]

Jobs cut were court clerks, court officers across the board, analysts, librarians, aides, stenographers, court reporters, attorneys and support staff. The layoffs are said to be part of a permanent downsizing.[1]
