Texas: Yesterday, Governor Rick Perry appointed a new justice to the Texas Supreme Court. Jeff Brown, a Houston-based judge of the 14th District Court of Appeals for the past six years, was elevated to the state's highest civil court. Brown will replace Nathan Hecht, who was elevated to the position of chief justice when Wallace Jefferson announced his retirement.
Governor Perry stated:
“ | Jeff is a staunch defender of the constitutional freedoms our state and our nation are founded upon and he will uphold these values with honor, dignity and integrity as a Supreme Court justice. I am pleased he will continue his lifelong commitment to public service and the people of Texas by accepting this appointment.[1][2] | ” |
Brown has served on the bench for approximately 12 years, first for the 55th District Court and then for the Court of Appeals. He ran for election to the Supreme Court in 2010, but was unsuccessful. He will have to run for re-election in 2014 if he wishes to keep his seat.[3]
