BOISE, Idaho: After the original commission failed to adopt new legislative and congressional district maps, Idaho lawmakers have until September 28th to convene an all-new redistricting commission.[1] The chairmen of the Republican and Democratic parties, along with Idaho Senate and House leadership, are responsible for appointing members to the redistricting commission. The Idaho Supreme Court ruled on September 9 that it does not have the authority to order the original commission back to work.[2] Idaho Secretary of State Ben Ysura had requested that lawmakers expedite their selection of the commission, but lawmakers legally have 15 days to make their selections.[1] Redistricting commissions are comprised of three Democrats and three Republicans. A 2009 law states that previous commissioners may not serve again. Idaho currently has two congressional districts, both held by Republicans.[3]
