Three seats on the Newark Public Schools school board in New Jersey were up for general election and one seat was up for special election on April 16, 2024. The filing deadline for this election was February 26, 2024.

In the regular general elections, nine candidates ran for three seats. Incumbents Dawn Haynes, Vereliz Santana, and Helena Vinhas ran as the “Moving Newark Schools Forward” slate. Haynes and Santana ran as part of the “Moving Newark Schools Forward” slate in 2021 and 2018.[1]

Che' J.T. Colter and Muta El-Amin ran as the “It Takes a Village” slate.[1]

Latoya Jackson, Sheila Montague, Debra Salters, and Jimmie White also ran.

Between 2016 and 2023, candidates running as the “Moving Newark Schools Forward” slate have won all elections to the board. In 2022, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka (D) endorsed the slate.

As of 2024, Newark Public Schools was the largest district in New Jersey, with an estimated enrollment of more than 41,000 students.
