News Corp is a global media corporation based in New York. It was founded in 2013, after News Corporation split; the new News Corp's focus is in print and digital publishing and services, while the broadcasting sector became 21st Century Fox.[1]
Background
In 2013, Rupert Murdoch split his company News Corporation. The two new entities became 21st Century Fox, which took over the broadcasting and entertainment assets, while News Corp retained the publishing assets, which included about 30 newspaper publications.[1]
News Corp owns Amplify, which was founded in 2012 as an educational resource of digital products and services for K-12 students, teachers and parents.[2]
In 2013, News Corp purchased Storyful for $25 million.[3] Storyful is a company that monitors social media for newsworthy news and videos. Journalists then confirm their authenticity and Storyful recirculates the content to newsrooms around the world.[4] The New York Times notes that News Corp's entry into the arena of social media marks a shift for the company into the "age of social media."[3]
On November 15, 2023 Rupert Murdoch stepped down from his position as chairman of News Corp., turning over control to his son, Lachlan.[5] As of August 2025, Murdoch remained chairman emeritus of the company.[6]

Authorities in Britain began investigating possible phone hacking involving News Corp employees in the 2000s. The phone hacking investigation in the U.K. involved two employees, editor Clive Goodman and investigator Glenn Mulcaire, of News of the World—a British tabloid owned by News Corp.[19] Those whose phones were hacked included families of British troops who had died in combat, celebrities, politicians and people involved in terrorist attacks and murders.[20] News Corp closed down News of the World in 2011.[21] In 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice began an investigation into allegations that News Corp had hacked into voicemails belonging to September 11 victims.[22] The Department of Justice concluded its investigation in August 2015 without charges being filed.[23]
