Three seats on the Newton County Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, though all three seats were unopposed in 2014. District 1 candidate Stan Edwards (R), District 3 incumbent Shakila Henderson-Baker (D) and District 5 incumbent Abigail Coggin won their primaries without opposition.

Newton County Schools is located in Newton County, Georgia. The county seat of Newton County is Covington. Newton County was home to 102,446 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Newton County Schools was the 21st-largest school district in Georgia, serving 19,168 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Newton County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 19.1 percent of Newton County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Newton County was $51,336 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Newton County was 14.6 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Newton County Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Each member is elected to a specific geographic district. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats are up for election in 2014.[3]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]
