Eight seats on the School Committee for Newton Public Schools were up for general election on November 5, 2013. Incumbents Angela Pitter-Wright, Diana Fisher Gomberg, Steven Siegel, Matt Hills and Margie Ross Decter ran unopposed and won the Ward 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 seats, respectively. Newcomers Ellen P. Gibson and Ruth E. Goldman ran unopposed for the Ward 1 and 6 seats, while Margaret L. Albright defeated Andrea R. Steenstrup for the Ward 2 seat.

Newton Public Schools is located in northeast Massachusetts in Middlesex County. The county seats of Middlesex County are Newton and Cambridge. As of the 2010 Census, the county was home to 1,552,802 residents.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Newton Public Schools was the ninth-largest school district in Massachusetts and served 12,079 students.[2]
Demographics
Middlesex County outperformed the rest of Massachusetts in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 50.7 percent of Middlesex County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 39.4 percent for Massachusetts as a whole. The median household income in Middlesex County was $82,090 compared to $66,866 for the state of Massachusetts. The poverty rate in Middlesex County was 8.1 percent compared to 11.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Newton School Committee consists of nine members, eight of whom are elected to two-year terms. The ninth member and Chair of the board is Newton's mayor. The other eight members of the board are elected at-large by the district as a whole, although each member represents a different ward in the school district. There was no primary election and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. All eight seats were on the ballot in 2013.[4] The filing deadline for the 2013 general election was July 30.[5]

Endorsements
In the Ward 2 race, Andrea R. Steenstrup received endorsements from the Newton Teachers Association, State Senator Cynthia Stone Creem and many Newton School Committee members and local Aldermen.[6][7] Her opponent, Margaret L. Albright, received an endorsement from the Newton TAB.[8]
Campaign finance
Candidates received a total of $20,215.10 and spent a total of $10,113.29 during the election, according to the Newton Election Commission.[9]

What was at stake?
There were eight seats on the school board up for election on November 5, 2013. Five incumbents ran unopposed for re-election, including Angela Pitter-Wright, Diana Fisher Gomberg, Steven Siegel, Matt Hills and Margie Ross Decter. Fellow incumbents Geoff Epstein, Jonathan Yeo and Chairperson Claire Sokoloff did not file for re-election. Newcomers Ellen P. Gibson and Ruth E. Goldman ran unopposed for Epstein and Sokoloff's seats, respectively. The only contested race was in Ward 2 for Yeo's seat, for which Margaret L. Albright defeated Andrea R. Steenstrup.[10]

Additional elections on the ballot
This election only shared the ballot with other municipal elections. Newton's Mayor and School Committee Chair, Setti Warren, won re-election in 2013. All 24 seats on the Board of Aldermen were also up for election.[10][11]
