Nick Carey is a former chemist turned community organizer. He has led campaigns to make housing more affordale, expand voting rights and more. He works with local faith communities and everyday people to build a community that welcomes everyone, and demands a more fair economy. He believes that if we build a community that puts people over profits, St. Pete can be a city that works for everyone!
  • Lowering the Cost-of-Living: St. Pete's success hasn't been spread evenly, & it's harming all of us. Nick will prioritize our housing, jobs and childcare above developer profits
  • Infrastructure & Environment: By investing in the basics that make a city run we can improve the day to day lives of our residents and protect our environment long term. Nick will fight for investments in our stormwater and road infrastructure to protect our homes while also pushing for a rapid path to 100% renewable energy.
  • Community Engagement & Support: All of our residents should feel safe and welcome. Nick will work to strengthen our city's parks, libraries, youth services, democracy, and more.
I deeply care about the state of housing affordability. So often it is spoken about in an economic context, but there's also a social and community context that comes with displacement as a consequence of people not being able to afford to live where their social connections are. Beyond that, I'm passionate about issues of social justice where people are excluded from being able to participate fully in their community and democracy.
I believe that accountability is the foundation of a healthy democracy. With each passing election cycle it seems elected officials become more and more beholden to special interests and lose that accountability to their constituents. The responsibility of government is not to maximize profit for shareholders, its to the economic stability, safety, and quality of life of its residents.
If I have a superpower, its empathy. I have a compassion for people that is rooted in my faith and belief that we are all created in the image of God and our diversity of experiences and identities reflect that image. It leads my belief that all of our liberation is wrapped up in one another, so we must show up and fight for the most marginalized in our community, because that is where God can be found. I have dedicated my life to work towards a world in which everyone can live with dignity, has equitable access to the resources they need, and full access to participate in the decisions that will affect them as individuals and as a community.
