I grew up on a small farm in Delaware County and went on to study political science at Hartwick College. Three years into my degree, I had to pause my education due to financial hardship. I was working full time while pursuing my degree, but life expenses were still adding up. When the pandemic hit, I joined an essential sector that needed employees badly - education. I’m employed at Schenevus CSD as a long-term substitute teacher, currently teaching high school English. I have worked in education for the past two years, and my employment there inspired me to run for this office. As a state, we have a lot to fight for. Every day, I wake up and instill in my students the knowledge they need to be successful in today’s society. I’m running because I’d like to ensure that life in Central NY works for them, post-high school.
  • As Americans, we have only focused on what divides us. This has caused increased partisan divisions, and deadlock in nearly all levels of government. I'm running to help solve that problem, which is why my slogan is "Cherish Unity." We need to remember that all of us want NY to be a better place to live and raise a family, regardless of partisan affiliation. Let's put that aside and get to work!
  • We need to increase funding to rural schools. Our small schools are chronically underfunded, and that means those students don't have the same opportunities as a student from a more affluent district. How can we expect every student to grow up and pursue the American dream if they aren't given the proper resources to be successful? I plan to level the playing field and ensure that everyone has a fighting chance and ample opportunity, regardless of where they grew up.
  • Our farmers are struggling, and they need our help. In talking with farmers on the campaign trail, the common theme was that they were being crushed by property taxes. In doing research on the topic, I would like to try and implement elements of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933, which added an additional tax onto companies who buy raw materials for farms. In turn, this revenue can be used to give small farmers tax breaks. Farming is the backbone of our economy, and we do ourselves no favors by ignoring the issues farmers face.
Education and agriculture are two areas of public policy that I am personally passionate about. I grew up on a small farm, and attended a small, rural school in Upstate NY. I then went on to substitute teach long term in a few other schools as well. We can get a good estimate on the success of our future based on the quality of education our students receive today. We need to ensure that the quality across the board is improved, to better the outlook of New York's future. Agriculture is also an essential area because we rely on our farmers to put food on our table. They play an essential part in our economy, and we need to do everything in our power to ensure small farmers don't die out.
