As a homeowner and small business owner in Houston, Nick Hellyar understands the challenges facing our neighborhoods - flooding, street repair, public safety, increasing density and traffic, and getting the most out of the considerable tax dollars we pay. Nick grew up in central Houston, attending HISD public schools including Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School. After attending the University of Houston, Nick got his first exposure to public service, working as a staff member for a Houston City Council Member and a member of the Texas Legislature. It was this work - attending civic club meetings, responding to resident requests, and helping to deliver neighborhood level projects - that fostered his passion for public service and local government. Nick is a member of the Houston Association of Realtors, and he is a former Vice President & Board Member of the Houston GLBT Political Caucus. He now owns and operates a real estate business - The Hellyar Group - in Houston, where he focuses on buying and selling residential properties, rental placement, property management, and investment. As a business owner, Nick must work within a budget, make payroll, and maximize every dollar to be successful. He will bring that same sensibility to Houston City Council.
  • As an At-Large Council Member, I will take the lead in ensuring the proper planning, funding, and improvement of our city's infrastructure. Houston's roads are in disrepair, our homes are flooding each time it rains, and improvement projects are stalled or delayed due to insufficient funding and an inefficient permitting process. We must have enough adequate infrastructure to support our economy and quality of life now, and in the years to come.
  • After Hurricane Harvey, and continued 500-year floods over the past few months, the need to strengthen drainage and flood control has never been more urgent. Repairing our streets is integral to improving flood mitigation because our roads are designed to hold water, which prevents floodwater from reaching our homes. I will work to prioritize and expedite projects that do the most good by focusing on the worst areas first.
  • Resolving the City's financial challenges will be one of my top priorities. Using my experience as a small businessperson, and as a former City Hall staffer, I will work to improve the City's financial standing. We must work to be more accountable in order to cover our unfunded liabilities, such as pensions, and I pledge to be a good steward of our tax dollars. As an At-Large Council Member, I will always vote to protect our city's financial security.
- Improving our city's infrastructure

- Strengthening drainage and flood control
- Improving our city's finances

- Reducing traffic and increasing mobility with increased accessible transit options
Local government has the biggest impact on our daily lives. This race is about ensuring residents have access to core city services, like reliable garbage & recycling pickup, adequate city infrastructure to address increasing traffic & flooding, and smooth roads. It's about providing residents a high quality of life while addressing local issues in a fiscally responsible manner. When we build a strong foundation, our neighborhoods and businesses will thrive.

Yes. Having served as a City Council staffer and having worked for a State Representative, I have experience serving the people of Houston and I will be able to effectively roll up my sleeves and get to work for constituents on day one. I have a passion for and track record of working on city projects and city issues, as well as working with neighborhoods and community leaders to get things done.
