I will provide honest, accessible representation to move North County forward.
North County has been neglected for decades. With crumbling infrastructure, declining schools, and increasing crime, we've gone from being one of the region's best places to live, to an area that many are moving away from. We need bold leadership to demand our fair share in infrastructure investment, including long overdue improvements to I-270. We need fairness in assessments, so that our income isn't drained to subsidize the more wealthy areas of the county. We need innovation in education, so that our schools can perform better and retain residents. Most of all, we need a representative who will stand up and be heard for North County, so that our needs can be met. As the next representative of District 74, I will be that person.
Transparency. Many a supporter has told me, "While I don't always agree with you, you're honest, and I always know where you stand."
The first responsibility of a legislator is to have a live, ongoing connection to those he represents. That can only be done by regularly meeting and hearing from them, which I plan to do in forums throughout the district. A legislator must also be diligent in his understanding of the wide range of issues he'll face, which can only be accomplished when he "does his homework."
I hope that my passion for this community makes a meaningful difference in the quality of life for those who live here.
I was eight years old during the impeachment of President Nixon. Of course, I remember very little, other than the fact that the television was on all the time, and it wasn't cartoons. :)
I've worked as an information systems consultant for thirty years, mostly in a freelance capacity.
So many favorites, it's hard to decide. But one which stands out is The Gentleman from Indiana, by Booth Tarkington. Tarkington, who himself served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives, wrote a touching book focusing on an optimistic journalist facing corrupt politics. In fact, though, it's Tarkington's comfortable writing style, and the window he opens into the late 19th century midwest, which I find fascinating about not only this book, but his better known works.
Jerry Seinfeld. Which is funny, because he is both a fictional character and a real person.
I don't remember specifically, but it was definitely one from the 80s. Pop music from my early teen years was the best!
Focusing. I've had attention deficit since I was a child, and was never medicated for it as is common today. So I've adapted my life to accommodate it, engaging in a diversity of activities to keep my brain working as designed.
It would be difficult to be a legislator without some background that gives you an understanding of the many important decisions you'll be making. At the same time, there's such a thing as "too much experience" which we find in career politicians, whose focus often has turned away from the people who that representative was elected to serve.
It's vital to have relationships with other legislators, because no legislator can do anything without the cooperation of others. As a Libertarian, I'm in a unique position, because I'm not "the opposing party" to anybody. My friends include everyone from the young progressives who are transforming the Democratic party, to Republicans from West County. As a legislator, I will emphasize the common ground we share, and will gladly support good ideas regardless of what party they come from.
