Campaign themes

2014

Smith provided the following statement on his campaign website:

I am a concerned parent and voter in the district and I am not satisfied with the direction of the WCSD. I felt compelled to run for this position because we need to start a new conversation and forge a new path. I feel that I am the right guy at the right time for this position. I would appreciate your support.

I am running for Washoe County School District board of trustees in district C because the current board of trustees has lost touch with community, WCSD staff, and most importantly the more than 63,000 students they are there to serve. Our community deserves to have a board that will work together with our superintendent to promote positive culture towards education in our community. Our current boards recent course of action does not lend its self to this vision.

As trustee I will work hard to restore integrity to the board and regain the confidence of all those we serve. I will ensure that the tax payer dollars we receive are managed well and with significant oversight. I will not carelessly spend the money that others are trusting us to spend wisely.

We must double down our efforts to ensure that our teachers are highly motivated to produce great results and truly give our students a world class education. In talking to many teachers in the district it is clear to me that for some there is a clear lack of motivation as teachers have to deal with a lot of stress and change. Stress and change by the way is not unfamiliar to me. We need a uniform way to recognize our fantastic teachers. I have some great ideas on how we might accomplish the task of increasing morale and motivation in our classrooms. I know that happy people produce fantastic results.

It is vitally important the we find a funding source that is palatable to the majority of our community. Our schools do have some significant needs and we must address them. However I will be sure that we are first acting responsibly and holding ourselves accountable in regards to the dollars we are allocating before seeking additional funding from our tax payers.

As your trustee I will be sure to follow all laws. I will not violate the open meeting laws.

What I stand for

  • Accountability
  • Fiscal responsibility
  • Positive Culture
  • Following Open Meeting Laws

The work ahead of me

  • Restore integrity to the board of trustees
  • Regain the confidence of our community, staff, and students we serve
  • Provide the leadership necessary to work with our superintendent to achieve positive results
  • Build positive culture regarding education in our schools and community
  • Build meaningful Partners in Education relationships in our business community[5]
