Since announcing my candidacy for Worcester’s School Committee, I am frequently asked “why are you running?”

This is a fair question, more importantly, a question that voters and parents alike should be asking of all the candidates.

The short answer, and the answer that comes straight from my heart, is that I am confident in my ability to positively contribute to how we are shaping our Public Schools. Because I understand that the quality of our school system helps define the quality of life in our community and I love our community. I love Worcester, it is my home. It’s where I was raised and where I now raise my family and I can’t imagine a better way to give back to a City that has given so much to me, than to donate my time and energies into its future. A future which lies in its educational system.

It was Ben Franklin who wrote that “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” In our City Council race, we hear a lot of banter surrounding how to turn our City around, emphasizing things like “tax rates and tax base”. I argue that the formula for successes is much simpler and the return on investment greater. The success lies in developing a Strong Community and Strong Schools, which yields a Stronger, Greater Worcester! Most of my fellow candidates would probably agree that vibrant communities and neighborhoods, anchored by a top notch education system are vital to attracting families and businesses into our City.

Communities can boast about safe and beautiful neighborhoods, but if the school system is deemed weak, parents will seek alternatives such as private, charters, or homeschooling. Often times, we see parents concerned with the their children’s education who choose to relocate in order to send their children into better performing school districts, why, because the importance of a strong education far outweighs the advantages of living on a particular street, in a particular community.

Worcester’s leaders are working hard alongside our School Committee to put our educational system back on the right track, supplying necessary funding and resources. But in order to make the best use of these tools, we need people with as much passion as I have to lead the charge.

I will lead by focusing on leadership, educational opportunities, and good choices.

  • The School Committee’s leadership should be focused on setting policy for all the Worcester Public Schools. I would like to see our School Department lead the way, and our role on School Committee that of providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs.
  • We need to give back control of curriculum and evaluation methods to the educators and not have them “teach to a test”.
  • It is critical that we provide advanced opportunities in preparing our high school students for life after high school, whether it’s continuing their education or entering the workforce.
  • We need to make informed choices when it comes to budgetary decisions. As Worcester residents, we are heavily invested in our schools and, just as our friend Ben Franklin believed, we need to make those investments in the classroom.

I’m a far cry from a seasoned politician or the most popular candidate, and though that may hinder me in my quest for School Committee, I am a family man who wants the best for his family and yours too. Because contrary to popular belief, it does take a village. [5]
