Campaign website
Juan's campaign website stated the following:
A Judge for Precinct 8's Working Families
From the Front Lines to the Courtroom
I'm Nicolas Juan, and I am running to be your next Justice of the Peace for Precinct 8, Place 2. My perspective is different. I am not a career lawyer or politician. I'm a 32-year-old father, a renter right here in Precinct 8, and for the last four years, I've worked on the front lines of our healthcare system as a hospital sanitation worker.
"When you walk into the Justice of the Peace court, you deserve a judge who understands justice from the ground up, not just from a textbook."
The Justice of the Peace court handles the most critical issues in our community: evictions, small claims, debt, and public safety concerns. My mission is to transform it into a center for community resources, fiscal integrity, stability, and equal accountability under the law.
My commitment to you is centered on two core principles:
1 Fair and Consistent Enforcement of the Law
The law must apply to everyone equally, no matter their size or status.
Holding Corporate Landlords Accountable
As a renter myself, I know the pressure corporate interests place on our housing stability. I will strictly enforce state law to ensure that large, often out-of-state corporate landlords adhere to every legal requirement. We will champion eviction diversion efforts to stabilize our neighborhoods, ensuring that due process and fairness are paramount for every tenant and property owner.
Law and Order, With Common Sense
As Magistrate, I will uphold the law, supporting local law enforcement with the timely review of warrants and ensuring firm, consistent enforcement of traffic and community safety ordinances, like illegal dumping. We must end the practice of excessive fines that criminalize poverty by ensuring flexible payment plans are always available, keeping people accountable without pushing them further into debt.
2 Running an Efficient, Taxpayer-Friendly Court
Taxpayers deserve an efficient government. My court will be modernized for the 21st century.
Modernization and Accessibility
I will implement technology to cut down on bureaucratic waste and backlogs, making the court accessible and transparent for working families. We will have kiosks and literature ready for everyone to use and access so no one is in the dark while navigating our complex judicial system.
Community Legal Assistance
The courthouse will have community organizations providing low cost and free legal assistance for anyone who walks into the door. These programs are county and state specific, and encompass all aspects of Justice of the Peace cases and matters. These programs are designed to help anyone representing themselves in any case brought forth to the court.
Flexible Hearing Options
We will offer remote, evening and weekend options for hearings so that no one has to lose a day's pay just to seek justice or address their misdemeanor cases.
