Niki Bird Papazoglakis
Niki Bird Papazoglakis was a Democratic candidate for Governor of Louisiana in the 2011 election.[1] She lost to incumbent Republican Bobby Jindal in the primary election on October 22, 2011.
Biography
Papazoglakis was born in Thibodaux on Bayou Lafourche. She graduated from Louisiana State University in 2001 with a B.S. in international trade and finance.
Papazoglakis worked for 10 years in the private sector. She led the National Homeland Security, Justice and Public Safety practice for Unisys Corporation and was the State of Louisiana Enterprise Account Manager for Hewlett-Packard. Under Mike Foster's administration, Papazoglakis served as the legislative liaison for the LSU Agricultural Center. She also served as Policy Director for PAVE: Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment - a nonprofit focused on raising awareness and empowering victims of sexual violence.[2][3]
Elections
2011
The Louisiana gubernatorial election of 2011 was decided in the primary election. Incumbent Republican Bobby Jindal captured more than 50 percent of the vote in the blanket primary, winning re-election outright. The Louisiana general election was held on Saturday, November 19, 2011, but the office of governor did not appear on the ballot.[4]
Issue positions
In a candidate questionnaire submitted to the Times-Picayune, Papazoglakis said:
Louisiana needs change. We need more jobs, better jobs, education and works for our children and politicians who work for the people.[5]
On her campaign website, she touched on the following issues:
- Criminal justice: Niki, as a longtime advocate for survivors of violent crime, believes in a strong, fair jusice system and supports policies that protect our community.[6]
- Government performance: "Niki Bird believes in a government that works smartly and efficiently for the people!"[7]
- Economy:
- "Did you know that the State of Louisiana collects 20 cents of every gallon of gas at the pump? That’s well below the national average of 29.2 cents.
- Alaska has a revenue sharing plan with the oil companies in which the State of Alaska receives royalties from ALL the oil that is processed through their State. They only pay 8 cents per gallon of gas.
- Louisiana’s plan differs in that we have a severance tax on oil and natural gas resources produced in our state which causes us to earn less of the proceeds, pay higher taxes at the pump, and absorb the environmental impacts without the resources to correct the environmental damage.
