Biography

Nilo Vega Michelin was born in Los Angeles, California. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1983 to 1986. He earned a bachelor's degree from UCLA in 1988 and a law degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1992. He also attended the United States Naval Academy. His career experience includes working as a teacher. He previously served as an El Camino College trustee and deputy city attorney.[1]

I am a El Camino College Trustee, teacher, and attorney. I was raised by a single mother and have experienced the struggles of working-class families in District 35. I am of Costa Rican, Italian, and Argentine descent. I attended Gulf Avenue School in Wilmington and Halldale Avenue School in Harbor Gateway.

Through hard work and family support, I was able to attend the US Naval Academy and graduate from UCLA and UCLA Law School. I have served my community as a Hawthorne deputy city attorney, school board member, city councilmember, and history teacher. I have taught at Carson High School and at Dana Middle School in San Pedro.

I am currently a El Camino College Board Trustee. As President of the El Camino Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2022, I supported the following: Vocational and technological training for students. Providing formerly incarcerated students education and services. The opening of the Black Student Success Center. The future opening of the Latino Success Center. The “South Bay Promise” Program which provides free tuition for students. The “Dual Enrollment” Program which provides high school students with a college education.

  • Hold corporate polluters responsible.
  • Medicare for all and reducing prescription drug prices
I worked at the McDonalds restaurant at the corner of Carson St. and Denker Ave. for a few months.
I was raised by a single mother from Costa Rica

I have a history of building bipartisan coalitions to help the community.
