The Judicial Update

Kansas: An amendment that would have required drug tests for legislators and judges was rejected by a Kansas House of Representatives committee on March 27, 2012. The House Federal and State Affairs Committee was looking at an amendement to House Bill 2686. It would affect all of the state's legislators, as well as the Supreme Court justices and Court of Appeals judges.

Currently, only the Governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general are subjected to drug tests. Rep. Terri Lois Gregory , R-Baldwin City, who recommended the change, wanted to level the playing field. "The basic purpose of this is just equality," she stated.[1] On the other side, Rep. Mike Kiegerl, R-Olathe, stated, "This goes too far...Costs are going to be prohibitive. This would probably kill the bill."[1]
