Norma Levy Shapiro was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She joined the court in 1978 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. She assumed senior status on the court on December 31, 1998, and served until her death on July 22, 2016.[1][2]

Education

Shapiro graduated from the University of Michigan with her bachelor's degree in 1948 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with her J.D. in 1951.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Pennsylvania

Shapiro was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on August 1, 1978, to a seat vacated by Judge James Gorbey. Shapiro was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1978, and she received her commission the same day. Shapiro assumed senior status on the court on December 31, 1998, and she was succeeded in this position by Judge Cynthia Rufe. Shapiro served on senior status until her death on July 22, 2016.[1][2]
