A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. North Carolina utilizes a semi-closed primary system. Parties decide who may vote in their respective primaries. Voters may choose a primary ballot without impacting their unaffiliated status.[3][4]

I graduated from North Johnston High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree in information security from East Carolina worked for the State of North Carolina in IT for about a decade along with currently employed as a commercial truck driver. Voice the concerns in the district in Washington, DC versus Washington, DC telling our district what is best for us.

American people interest was put first over foreign affairs.

I am tired of seeing first responders and military members not taken care of. Either it be mental health, housing, judicial matters, retirement, pay, etc… A person that puts their time and life on the line to help others at a moments notice should be helped in any way that we can.

Submitted Biography "I was born and raised in the small town of Weddington, North Carolina, where my family has lived for three generations. I have worked for a commercial construction company in Raleigh, as a project manager, for over five years. I enjoy being outdoors in nature, and try to spend as much time as I can up in our beautiful North Carolina mountains. I fell in love with politics after reading the documents that whistleblower, Edward Snowden, released regarding the NSA's illegal surveillance program, which was being used to spy on everyday Americans. After watching several Congressional hearings on the matter, I saw there was little accountability from people who had committed perjury, or worse. I decided, as an obligation to my country, that I would do something to put out of control government agencies in check. I am now seeking to fulfill this obligation, by helping to reinstate accountability within our federal systems and ultimately, giving our government back to its American citizens - WE THE PEOPLE!"

Growing up in a small town, I witnessed first hand large, rapid growth, where family farms turned into multi-million dollar neighborhoods. I saw the lack of common sense from our elected leaders as they failed to plan ahead, prepare and account for our transportation infrastructure, school districts, and overall health of our small hometown. Our federal government is no different. As we send hundreds of billions of dollars overseas, our elected leaders have forgotten about America, our infrastructure, our schools and the overall health and happiness of our population. I seek to return basic common sense and accountability back into Congress to improve the overall health and happiness of American citizens.

In September of 2023, our country hit a record $33 trillion dollars in debt, while simultaneously running with an approximately $2.5 trillion dollar deficit. By the end of 2023, we will hit $34 trillion dollars in debt. This means we will add over $1 trillion dollars to our national debt in less than 100 days. To put this into perspective, 1 trillion seconds is roughly equivalent to 32,000 years. Yes, you read that right! The leaders of the greatest nation to ever exist, can't balance a checkbook! Furthermore, you and I will suffer the consequences from decades of ignorant, out of control spending. If elected, I will fight for common sense budgeting and spending, and pursue strategies to cut unnecessary spending.

America is currently under invasion because our crooked federal government has turned a blind eye and even assisted, in some cases, the cartel's establish trafficking routes allowing tens of thousands of illegal migrants to enter our country illegally, on a daily basis. The word illegal is key here. If an American citizen does something illegal, there are legal consequences. During a Congressional hearing over the summer of 2023, witnesses testified the US had lost track of 85,000 migrant children which passed through our broken immigration system. We must not only close our border, but hold responsible those who made these illegal activities possible, no matter what position or party they are from.

Biography:  Knott obtained his law degree from Wake Forest University. Knott worked as a federal prosecutor in the office of the U.S. Attorney for Eastern North Carolina. Knott resigned to run in the 2024 election.

Key Messages

The following key messages were curated by Ballotpedia staff. For more on how we identify key messages, click here.

Knott said he was running because while serving as a federal prosecutor he "saw firsthand the devastating harm serious crime does to our communities. The open border policies now in place allow a catastrophic flow of crime that wreaks havoc across our state and country."

Knott said he was a political outsider and that his policy priorities would be to "help President Trump secure our border, defeat the radical left, and put criminals behind bars."

Knott said Daughtry had donated to Democratic candidates in past election cycles, including Cheri Beasley (D) and Josh Stein (D) and that he was the more conservative candidate.

The government overreach during our COVID epidemic violated all tenets of patient autonomy in healthcare. No government has a right to dictate what chemical gets injected into your body.

As an emergency physician, I see the horrible death and destruction caused by the opioid epidemic and fentanyl crisis. We must do more to stop this surge! It is the leading cause of death in young Americans. We must stem the tide and secure our borders!

With 20 years of military service to our nation and as a military commander, I am concerned about Congress's lack of attention to the security threats against our nation. Congress's inability to approve budgets on time and to properly fund our military is unacceptable and it theatens the safety of our country.

Beating Inflation. As an Accountant there is nobody else you would want in office other than me to help : 1.) Lower Personal Taxes 2.) Lower Business Taxes 3.) Lower Gas Prices 4.) De-Regulate 5.) Cut Costs 6.) Cut Wasteful Spending

Helping Veterans 1.) Ending Homelessness for Veterans. I plan to appropriate funds out of the EPA, IRS, Dept. of Educ. and other useless agencies and give those funds to get housing for Homeless Veterans. 2.) Getting rid of the horrible waiting times at the VA. Congress can seize this power from the VA Secretary and enforce it jointly. 3.) Getting Better GI Bills for Veterans 4.) Getting Veterans jobs when they transition to society. This will be done by giving tax breaks to companies who have a certain amount of Veterans on payroll. 5.) Letting Veterans see a doctor of their choice and get private insurance, if needed.

Border Security •1.) I will file a TRADE WAR with Mexico on Day One. For every illegal alien that comes in Mexico will have to pay a VERY HIGH Tariff, Sanctions, etc.  Remember Mexico allows all this to happen.  •2.) I will file a bill to have ICE and the other branches of the Federal Government invade Sanctuary Cities and start kicking out all the Illegal Aliens that live there - and to enforce MASS DEPORTATIONS of ILLEGAL Aliens. Crossing the border is already a felony - yet due to the negligence of the Biden Administration we will give illegal aliens one final chance to leave peacefully. •3.) I will file a bill that ANY Illegal Alien that is convicted of a Felony SHALL BE PUT TO DEATH.

Submitted Biography "One of the most rewarding things I've done is volunteer with my miniature dachshund, Bruno, at children's hospitals in the cancer section so the kids can play with him. Hearing a mom say "I haven't seen my son laugh in 6 months" makes it all worth it. But I'm from a proud military & law enforcement family that has served this country for as long as I can remember. My father’s family goes back 7 generations of Americans all the way back to my ancestors serving in the Colonial militia in the American Revolution. My mother’s family were refugees from Europe after World War 2, fleeing Soviet communist persecution. As a kid, I wanted to be a fighter pilot, but God had other plans for me & I never lost my devotion to defend my country. After earning a master’s in Philosophy & in the midst of my PhD work in Nuclear War Strategy at King’s College London, I saw American decline because of weak & inept leadership--first, when Russia invaded Crimea & then when ISIS almost took over Iraq. I was station in Quantico, Virginia as a Counterintelligence Officer, protecting our country’s most guarded secrets from Russia & China. While overseas with European Command, I became a Naval Officer in the Navy Reserve. As an intelligence officer, I’ve seen the best this country has to offer & I’ve seen some of the most wasteful & inept as well. I know what it will take to root out the rot that some have allowed to take hold. I am nobody’s ‘yes man’ & I will stand up for North Carolina. "

For too long our politicians have been more interested in making a point rather than making a difference. It’s time for principled, decent people to serve their country rather than extremist ideologues more interested in making a name for themselves.

Despite all the divides us, despite all the corruption, people that I’ve spoken to Democrats and Republicans alike still believe in the inherent goodness of the American system. Defending our rights, liberties, and hard won freedoms has never been so important.

We North Carolinians are famous for our courage. More North Carolinians volunteered to fight for freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan than from any state of its size. More North Carolinians served in the War on Terror than any state of its size; and more North Carolinians gave their lives in those wars than from any other state of its size. It’s time we send someone to Washington who will show our country the best of what North Carolina has to offer.

Submitted Biography "I was born in Maryland and raised in Richmond, VA to legal Chinese immigrant parents. I grew up Christian and evangelized to my friends, going as far as to convert some of them. I attended Davidson College where I eventually graduated with a Mathematics degree. I also founded the universities chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), a conservatism youth activism organization, after being met with a wave of progressive woke-ism at the institution. I also served as a Student Leader at Reformed University Fellowship, a Christian organization on campus, and on the E-Board of College Republicans. After graduating I founded a non-profit called Color Us United which advocates for a race-blind, merit-based culture in America. Most notably, we have pressured Salvation Army into rescinding the D.E.I trainings they were forcing onto employees and we have exposed American Express for offering incentives for racially-outlined hiring quotas. I was the leading activist in the Supreme Court cases against Harvard and UNC regarding their racially-biased admissions practices, having jumped onto the case 4 years into the 8 year effort, then helping spearhead the effort to TAKE DOWN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. I've also authored two best-sellers, "An Inconvenient Minority" and "School of Woke." I now enter politics to take my mission of anti-CRT and anti-DEI, as well as other issues, to the national level, and create further change for a conservative America."

Key Messages

Anti-CRT/Anti-DEI. Critical Race Theory and Diversity/Equity/Inclusion policies are some of the most destructive cultural factors in America today. These ideologies must be eradicated from schools and businesses in entirety, and replaced with merit-based approaches.

Close the border. With no excuses, ifs, buts or wiggle room, we must: End privileges for illegals (healthcare, housing, education, etc), deport them, and build the wall to close the southern border once and for all.

Economy. We are in horrendous debt and deficit, and while the culture war is paramount, we cannot ignore this. We must take measures to restore the purchasing power of the American dollar by stopping inflation and reducing mortgage rates.

Post-filing deadline analysis

The following analysis covers all U.S. House districts up for election in North Carolina in 2024. Information below was calculated on 1/10/2024, and may differ from information shown in the table above due to candidate replacements and withdrawals after that time.

Sixty-four candidates filed to run for North Carolina’s 14 U.S. House districts in 2024, including 15 Democrats and 49 Republicans. That’s 4.6 candidates per district, less than the 7.14 candidates per district in 2022, the first election after the number of congressional districts in North Carolina increased from 13 to 14.

In 2020, when the state still had 13 Congressional districts, 4.9 candidates filed to run. In 2018, 4.3 candidates filed, and, in 2016, 5.7 did.

The 2024 election was the first to take place under new district lines that the North Carolina General Assembly adopted on October 25, 2023.

The 64 candidates who filed to run in 2024 were fewer than the 100 who ran in 2022. In 2020, 64 candidates also ran, although North Carolina had one fewer district then. Fifty-six candidates ran in 2018, the decade low.

Five seats were open in 2024, one more than in 2022 and a decade high.

Reps. Jeff Jackson (D-14th) and Dan Bishop (R-8th) did not run for re-election in order to run for state attorney general, while Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-10th) retired from public office. Reps. Kathy Manning (D-6th) and Wiley Nickel (D-13th), who did not run for re-election either, cited the partisan lean of their redrawn districts as the reason.

Fifteen candidates—one Democrat and 14 Republicans—ran for the open 13th district, the most candidates running for a seat in 2024. Thirteen primaries—two Democratic and 11 Republican—were contested. That was fewer than the 22 contested primaries in 2022, and tied with 2020 as the lowest number of contested primaries this decade. As a percentage of all possible primaries, the 13 contested primaries in 2024 were the lowest this decade (46%). North Carolina had 13 districts in 2020, making the 13 contested primaries that year 50% of all possible major party primaries.

Four incumbents—one Democrat and three Republicans—faced primary challengers. The 3rd and 6th Congressional districts were guaranteed to Republicans because no Democrats filed to run. Republicans filed to run in every congressional district, meaning none were guaranteed to Democrats.

Partisan Voter Index

Heading into the 2024 elections, based on results from the 2020 and 2016 presidential elections, the Cook Partisan Voter Index for this district was R+11. This meant that in those two presidential elections, this district's results were 11 percentage points more Republican than the national average. This made North Carolina's 13th the 135th most Republican district nationally.[5]
