Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the state board of education and superintendent of public instruction reads:[1]

The mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education and the North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction is to use their constitutional authority to guard and maintain the right to a public education for every student in North Carolina and to support public school units in providing every student an excellent education that prepares them for success in their next phase of life.[2]

Superintendent

The current North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction is Mo Green (D). Green assumed office in 2025.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of the Lieutenant Governor, the State Treasurer, and eleven other members who are appointed to eight-year terms by the Governor and a joint session of the Legislature. Eight members represent each of the eight education districts, and the three remaining members are appointed at-large. The Superintendent serves as secretary and chief administrative officer. The board is also advised by eight non-voting advisors. The Board is responsible for "supervising and administering the free public school system and the educational funds provided for its support."[3]
