Fund Public Education. Every student in North Carolina must be provided with an equitable, sound, and basic education. It’s time to fully fund our public education system for students from early childhood education through K-12. The work has been done, and the studies have been completed which lay out a plan to fully fund our public education system. It’s time to invest properly in our children’s future.

Preserve and Protect our Environment. Climate change is real, and it’s impacting our area. We must bring innovative solutions to ensure our air and water quality is safe today and into the future. The rapid growth we are seeing in Southern Wake County is impacting our natural resources, and impacting the quality of our water and air.

Fair Elections and Voting Rights. Democracy works when every eligible voter can have their voices heard in free and fair elections. Our maps for our district were recently redrawn because of issues with gerrymandering. Now that the map is set, it’s time to ensure that voters are educated on the ways they can vote in upcoming elections, and that they are protected from being intimidated at the polls.
Investing in education, protecting and preserving our environment, making healthcare accessible and affordable, promoting a safe community, and protecting voting rights.
When I was six years-old, I remember our family watching the funeral of Robert F. Kennedy on TV. Since we lived in Canada, I had many questions for my parents, asking about who he was, and why he was killed. I remember everyone being so sad that he was taken so young. I vividly remember hearing ‘America The Beautiful’ for the first time as part of the event. I thought that was the most beautiful song, and the words made a strong impression on me.
I worked as a waitress at the Busy Bee Restaurant in Temagami, Ontario. This small tourist town had only a few restaurants, a post office, a grocery store, a train station, and my Dad owned the local hotel. I was used to working at our family business, helping in whatever way was needed. However, getting a job at the Busy Bee meant that I would be able to earn my own money. I was 15 when I first started working there, and continued to work the following summer. I preferred working the morning shifts, so I served a lot of coffee, and since smoking was allowed in public places at that time, I cleaned a lot of ashtrays.
My favorite book is Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. I’ve read it more than once because it is so full of scientific information, and the stories behind how different disciplines of science and other common institutions were formed. Imagine being the person who is trying to organize the periodic table because it didn’t exist? I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading it again.
