North Dakota Filling of Judicial Vacancies, Measure 1 (1998)

The North Dakota Filling of Judicial Vacancies Referendum, also known as Measure 1, was on the June 9, 1998 ballot in North Dakota as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment, where it was approved.[1] The measure provided that a person appointed by the governor to fill a judicial vacancy on the North Dakota Supreme Court or North Dakota District Court serves at least two years and until the next general election thereafter. The measure also provided that the subsequent term for that judgeship may be reduced to allow for the minimum two-year term and for the staggering of judicial elections.[2]

Text of measure
Summary
This amendment provided that a person appointed by the governor to fill a judicial vacancy on the supreme court or district court serves at least two years and until the next general election thereafter. The subsequent term for that judgeship may be reduced to allow for the minimum two-year term and for the staggering of judicial elections.[3]
